A few easy 964 RS questions ....

Hello. I was having a nose around my 964 RS and noticed a few things that I wanted to check:

1. Should both Recaro seats have the seat cushion (under the leather panels) and the lumber support (behind the leather seat back) or should it just be the driver's seat?

2. Next to the fuel filler cap, there is a small reservoir. I am not sure that it has been used for a while - what is this for?

3. Is the jack for an RS the same as for a 964? Can anyone suggest where I can get one from?

4. Due to the height difference between the brake and accelerator pedals I find it difficult to heel and toe when shifting down. Can this be adjusted or would I need to increase the pedal height of the accelerator by adding a block/pedal to the accelerator pedal (I have seen this done on many 993 RSs)?

5. Where is the best place to get an owners manual in English?

6. Does anyone have a list of press articles on the 964 RS? I have a few road tests etc buit would be interested in reading other reports - would love to borrow them or get a copy if anyone has anything relevant.

Any help/answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Would probably have been standard originally, just gone missing, I assume.

2. Next to the fuel filler cap, there is a small reservoir. I am not sure that it has been used for a while - what is this for?

Screen wash, or intense screen wash?

3. Is the jack for an RS the same as for a 964? Can anyone suggest where I can get one from?

Assume yes.

4. Due to the height difference between the brake and accelerator pedals I find it difficult to heel and toe when shifting down. This has been done to my Cup Car, just a standard accel pedal rubber glued over the extg. one. Still found them too far apart when I've got racing pixie boots on, so have added a Sparco metal pice screwed over the brake pedal -but the metal of the original pedals extremely tough -I got thru two drill bits.....

5. Where is the best place to get an owners manual in English?

Try OPC, also ebay.

6. Does anyone have a list of press articles on the 964 RS? I have a few road tests etc buit would be interested in reading other reports - would love to borrow them or get a copy if anyone has anything relevant.

Oh boy, loads........

Hope this a start.

Mel

Thanks Mel.

Thought the tube could be for screen wash but there is a reservoir for that under the bonnet so not sure??

Might have to have a look at your pedal arrangement next time I see your car before attempting any mods to mine - you are right about the distance between pedals, larger than I would have expected on a sports car.

Would love to borrow some mags if you wouldn't mind lending them out. I don't live far from you so could have them back to you very swiftly - promise to be careful with them etc.

Are you going to the Ace cafe on Tuesday? Perhaps see you there?

Regards

Seat cushion under the leather panels? my car has a small amout of padding to cover the base of the seat and thats it, nothing resembling a cushion! later 993 RS's have that type of seat whereby the bottom of the seat appears to be "sprung" with a sort of cushion (sorry best description i can give) It may be possible that very late chassis No cars have these 993RS type seats. both RS's I have owned and a large majority of the ones I've looked at have no cushion that comes to mind.
The cap and tube you describe is indeed the high intensity washer sytem filler which of course is not fitted to the RS. Pour water down it and it will land on the floor (or should!)
Your pedals do have a small amount of adjustment and the pedals "should" be level but most are'nt due to wear and tear. I don't advise adjusting the pedals yourself. However Mel's method is a good Idea and most people end up moding the pedals in some way(covers blocks of wood or metal etc) in order to be able to heel and toe more easily.
The jack is the same as the C2 as far as I can remember and will be availiable from your opc (expensive way) or a Porsche breakers Porscheapart, Douglass Valley or the like and most specialist independants too.
Try the OPC for the manual or Gmund books. or trawl the ads in Porsche Post.
A list of tech books and magazine articles...........hmmm that would be nice????!!!!!! Anyone like to add to the following and make a definative list

Porsche carrera 2/4 workshop Manual includes RS turbo etc Factory only "alledgedly"[:)]
Porsche Carrera 2/4 Tech Spec book (small pocket book)
Porsche carrera RS Technical information booklet (A4 size)
Auftragsnummer 964 book by Adrian Streather

As I am writting this away from my book collection I'll let others add the rest[:)]

Thanks for the information Laurence. Will be good to meet everyone eventually, perhaps at Brands. Also a good chance to check everyones cars out!!! [;)]

Hi. Could someone do me a favour and check the part no on their jack please?

I seem to get different stories from shops regarding the jack - some say it differs between RS and non-RS, others say that it differs only between pre 92 (scissor type) and post 92 (993 part) cars.

I want to get the right one, would be grateful for a part number. Have tried two different OPCs and even got different answers from them!!

Many thanks

have not checked car but Porsche parts catologue lists two jacks one of which had been discontinued. Only jack available is part No 000 721 711 02 and relates to a 1993 onwards version (though would fit earlier car as this is what is infered by discontuing the old jack), there does not appear to be a seperate part no for the RS Jack so would assume one fits all.

Recaros, there is additional padding under the passenger cushion on my car (italian origin), no additional lumbar support tho' other than the padded leather.

Books, good info in latest edition of Paul Frere's Porsche 911 Story
John Starkey's R to RSR, Carrera RS (Gruber & Konradsheim) - though this is focused on the 2,7.

Mags. too many to list in detail, original road test in Motorsport is good, also Autocar - some of these were reprinted and available from dealers at the time. Period articles in Excellence (US didn't get the RS but I think Excellence reviewed it) also articles on RS America, 964 C4 lightweight, provide interesting comparison.
Recent articles in 911 & PW & GT Purile (my car back in may 2002 & I think Laurence's sometime after?) more recent buyers guide.

Ebay is a good source of books & mags including Christophorus (don't know if there are english editions from '91).

Sorry not to be more specific like Laurence I'm away from the books & mags.

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses. Re the jack, the part number I was quoted by OPC was 000 721 711 00. I was offered a jack this evening which said "911 Turbo & RS" and part number was 000 721 711 04. I am sure that both will jack the car up but I would prefer to get the original item so it fits well in under the bonnet.

I may wait until I see a few other cars and check part numbers. Thanks for your help.

The 00 ending part number is the one that is discontinued! if the OPC had clicked on the part number they would have seen a message that tells them discontinued please use part no --------------02 . Will check mine today and will reckon on it being an 00 part no.

Update
just checked my own jack. There is no part no stamped on it anywhere. However there is a sticker whch says something like jack for Carrera 2/4 and 944 (so jack is universal) also the jack is date stamped 09/91. All 964's have the same jacking mounts btw.

Just check that the jack is low enough to get under the sill to jack the car up. It is shockingly low and I seem to remember thinking that the RS jack went a little flatter than normal to allow for this. I probably imagined it, but do check that the jack gets under the car.

Yoda, some pics of the original jack and bits in and out of the car, so you can see how it fits.

Laurence

If you invest in a few bags if cement you'll find that'll do the job nicely. I'ts a bit like a manual version of the adjustable ride height that you get with certain Mercedes. Its a trick I learnt when I was skint trying to make my 3.0 capri look cool.[:D]
