a few problems

My 'new' 924 has a few minor glitches that i could do with some advice on please. Firstly the odometer does not add the miles on but speedo ok, the sunroof is slow to open, the bulb on the clock doesn't work. i know these are only minor defects but my porsche is mint, red and has about 25 service stamps and recently had new clutch, cambelt , gearbox overhaul so it has been well looked after and i want it to be just perfect. is the speedo easy to remove to repair, clock too? and any ideas on the roof.

In the FAQ section there is a write-up on how to repair the small cog that is the usual culprit as regards no mileometer movement.

Based solely on my experience with an '82 924, the hardest part MIGHT be getting the speedo out. Haynes just says glibly 'press the instrument rearward' - ie push from behind dash. Fine when the car was new but after 25 years mine were virtually stuck in as if glued !
Both speedo and rev-counter were absolute pigs to remove as the rubber gasket was so firmly stuck to the housing. Eventually after easing an ultra-thin screwdriver into the 'gap' and working it very carefully round, I was able to free them up. Before putting them back I put a very thin coating of silicone grease on the gasket so hopefully will not have the problem again if I need to replace blown bulbs etc.

Can't advise on electric sun-roof (but it could be just lubrication needed on gears, bushes etc within the motor).
One common VW - and therefore 924 - problem is seizing of wiper spindles and if not rectified it will burn out the motor. I've had two Passats with this problem and have just had to do it on the 924. You need the entire rack assembly off the car and on a workbench. Very easy to pull apart, just a circlip holding spindle in its bush. The original lubricant disappears over time (ten years in the case of the Passats so not bad !) and what looks like a very thin chrome coating starts to pit and lift off causing the spindle to seize in the bush. Clean the bushing out with thinners/electrical cleaner/solvent.
Very lightly emery off the high spots (or use a Swiss file) where the plating is lifting.
I prefer to use silicone grease as it is durable and waterproof but ordinary grease would probably work for several years. Fill spindle bearing housing with grease and reassemble, not forgetting the little O-rings that are supposed to keep water out and grease in. I also pull apart the ball joints and snap them back together after adding a smear of grease. There is a school of thought that says do not use lubricant on nylon bushes, leave them 'dry'. I prefer not too and have never had any subsequent problems.
You will find the wipers have picked up a dramatic amount of speed.
