Thought I would share these.
3 days before the MoT all wheels off and a good jet wash to the underside and each corner to clean and wash away the salt.
Just noticed the colour of the OS front coolant hose from the rad to the cross tube...Hoped it was just the muck and the jet wash.(lol)

Off to the MoT, pass with compliments. Good going.

Being a bit over-aware of the coolant pipe front system I keep a beady eye on the joints and of course the joint from that hose spotted during jet wash is weeping! Grrrr...

Off to Porsche and ordered a nice new one. Out of stock, 'sold the whole front end kit to a local garage yesterday', mine will be collectable Saturday.
Armed with enthusiasm and 'I've done this before, how hard can it be again' in the heart, jacked the car up and set to the job.

The NS one was a b!t&h and this one more so of course. A new approach worked wonders which I won't bore you with but the rusty as hell end popped out after an hour of easing, sawing, and suitable swear words. No damage to the critical O ring sealing land so it should repair water tight.
I think after this one I will have to actually do the whole front. (said that last time)
I will assemble the new hose with the plumper O rings for a greater seal pressure as worked on the NS.

Something satisfying about going to battle with this car and bloody WINNING!


 
Really, Porsche should be doing better than this Graham … they’re an engineering consultancy as well as a manufacturer after all!

I presume that they’re using the same arrangement on the 981/718? Hope they’ve learnt their lesson for the 992-series. It must be 25-years since the 986, although oddly enough I don’t recall owners of those vehicles mentioning any problems?

Yes, really is poor.
Zinc plated thin steel but the corrosion starts where the swage ring is pierced for the retaining clip in 2 positions.
There are gaps and holes and salt water simply get things rusty.
The O ring is totally flattened on one side, as per picture. The hose has no chance to seal over time.
The other identical connection to the rad is PERFECT but is shrouded by the inner wheel arch, and there is the nub of the issue, salt water to unguarded connections.

How much were these cars then? They should have got the Japanese to design these parts.
 
Yes, jump into a Toyota and expect 100k miles of trouble free motoring. My last 50k mile 996 needed £7k spending on it to rectify, air con pipes and rads, brake pipes, exhaust, suspension parts, discs etc so I promptly sold it and bought a newer Boxster. Not really good enough for an expensive top of the range motor is it!!
 
Had a Toyota Yaris from new, 10 years later is only had tyres, one set, and proper dealer servicing.
Had a Honda Civic for 12 years before that, needed nothing but tyres and Honda servicing.

Asked the Boss today if we should sell this money pit and buy a modern (less than 3 years old) AUDI TT, she said no!
 
New hose collected today from OPC and fitted a dream Used my oversize O ring on the one nasty end which took a bit of persuasion to snap in, but all tight. Ran the engine for a year before the hoses got warm after adding 3 litres of neat pink coolant via the engine tank, over filled the system, lifted the burp valve which did nothing so closed it all up and took it for a revvy drive round the estate which should have dislodged any air etc. Will check things tomorrow, no signs of leaks or weeps from the new pipe connections.

Decided to do the Full Monty if I have another leak, just can't stand the thought of loosening the subframe and steering etc, but as £800 is the going Indy rate, that's incentive enough!

Can go for a drive in it in 9 days time!
 
More an exaggeration, but it took ages to get the front hoses hot with the heater on flat out.
fingers crossed the levels will be good tomorrow morning.
