A Funny Noise

Occasionally when parked up (ignition off) I here a strange quiet "clickerty" noise coming from the glove box area. It sounds like a lot of little switches being flicked on and off. There is nothing in the glove box to make that noise but realise that fuse box is just behind there so its likley to be coming from there??

I have no faults with the electrics; that I am aware off. Although the passenger side side light has been a bit dodgy recently. I noticed it was not coming on so tapped the glass and it lit up, fine since then. I dont know if this has anything to do with it or not. As I mentioned earier the iginition is off when I have heard it.

Anyone had the same experience or know what it might be?

Hi Jez,

The clicking will almost certainly be coming from one of the relays in yor fuse box under the bonnet above the glovebox area, take the lid off the box & you should be able to feel the relay clicking if you gently touch the top. Work your way systematically through them till the correct one is found, it can then be identified from the diagram on the underside of the fuse box lid.

Could also be the small fan that draws cabin air over a thermister for the heating system.

It's located directly behind / above the glove box and fed from a tube that culminates in the small round grill near the cigar lighter.

Does it sound like it could be rotational like a slowly whirring fan catching on something ?

Rick.

My cab did it periodically, I think related to a dirty door switch on the passenger door.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll check the relays next time it happens. Assuming it is a relay is it a problem? What do I need to do next? Anything, or can it be left?

You mean like a leaf caught in the fan? If so, no, its a different kind of sound. It does repeat at a regular frequency like that. Thanks

Fen
What did you do to fix it? Is it something to be concerned about?

Jez,
If it is a relay then your next step will depend which circuit it is in. I would post futher details when you have them & someone with much more knowledge of electrics than me will help you from there.

I didn't worry about it. I think it stopped when my spannerman cleaned the switch but it came back a few months later and it did it from then on I believe.

I'll put a tenner on the door switches. Both mine did it until Fen mentioned the switches. They unscrew easily and a little wire brush banished the clicking forever [:D]

From memory (it's dark and i have a feeling it's the alarm plunger that causes the problem and my '90 car doesn't have one of them) it's a single cross-head screw to release the switch. I didn't do mine myself but if Paul managed it must be pretty straight forward and obvious [:D][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Sorry Paul, only joking.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

It's definitely a one [sm=spanner1.gif] job

From memory, coz it's dark outside, the switch is between the two door hinges. It's a black plastic tab ona metal plate with a rubber seal around it. Pushing it in causes the interior light to go out, and you'll hear a click [:D]

It's held in by one screw. When you take it out there are two wires at the back and you'll see a sliding contact that moves when you push the black tab in. Give that contact a good wiring (technical term) and the replacement is the reversal of removal.

don't do what i did, which is whilst the switch was removed and hanging by its wires, close the door (result - 1 mangled switch) [:(]

Could also be the small fan that draws cabin air over a thermister for the heating system

AHAAAAAAAAAAAA..........................

I wondered why there seemed to be a fan running when ignition is on yet main heater fan is off[;)]

Probably a good idea.

Remember NOT to shut the hatchback with the battery disconnected

Because the boot lock release motors wont work!!

Thank you I had not thought of that.
