A harness question

I've been asked my opinion but have no idea. Can anybody shed some light please?

Martin,

We are planning to put some harness in RS#196
We found some holes to mount them on the back shelf about 11.5inch from the C-pillar

This is the same spot as in my other RS

Except that these holes are smaller (M8x1) instead of the normal bigger belt thread
Any idea on this?
Is this normal in an "early" version.
Or do we have to look for these holes in some other place in these early versions?

We can also use the normal back seat belt mount at the side of the shelf. But it seems that these are to far to the side and will not hold the harness in the correct place in case of an accident.

The rest of the harness mount are in the normal and correct places

Is it thus normal that we now have a car with smaller mounting thread in the back and can these be used for an harness?

Any ideas?

Not sure I can answer the exact question but can add to some harness considerations. So a useful source of information on Schroths website.

[FONT=century gothic"]Bolt Diameter[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
· Stock thread holes commonly are 7/16" 20 UNF. Therefore, all SCHROTH models come with bolts and eye-bolts matching this dimension.
· A few chassis are manufactured with 15/32" or ½" thread holes at the inner [centre tunnel] anchorages. See the section "Brackets" for those thread holes that accept 15/32" or ½" bolts.
· Individually made chassis and roll cages often use other dimensions, which vary from 8 mm or 5/16" [mostly for anti-submaring strap installation] to 10 mm or 3/8" in diameter for lap- and shoulder belt installation.
· Eye-bolts for 10 mm thread holes [P/N SG 35] are available at your SCHROTH-dealer or importer.
· For all other dimensions you must provide the correct bolt diameter, type of thread and bolt length.

In addition something I can add to my experience of recently fitting a harness. A couple of points to note.
- Whilst the CS has mounting holes on the rear shelf (I think?), clearly there is a cage to mount belts on, which is preferable as an option if the car has a cage. Better to fit to the cage, as less length of harness to cover (read stretch).
- Equally, if you have the SPG recaro seats, then the drivers side seat is much closer to the centre console, and hence wont take an Eye mount fitting, as it fouls on the seat on the runners. As a result the original belts had hex bolts. Newer belts (like the Profi II-6H I've fitted) have clip buckles for the lap belts. In this situation there is an adapter that you can get that will solve this specific problem, that is still FIA compliant.

- when you purchase your belts you will find that the eye bolt fittings come with the set, but the adapter brackets dont. you will need to ask for these. Look for B 23 A bracket on this page http://www.schroth.com/installation-instructions/en/index.html
- also worth noting that the clip buckles have holes for split pins to ensure they cant unclip, however, last time I look around a collection of porsches, non had the the split pins in. Anonther things worth checking. Even my original belts didnt (I assume they were refitted to the car, post its racing past!)
- Also if you dont have a cage (I guess most RS do), then consider if you should have a harness, whilst a harness is great at keeping you in place, thats not good, if the roof is going to collapse anyway. Generally, harnesses are not recommended without a cage of some description.
- Oh dont use the seat belt mounts, as stated not right from a safety perspective.

Finally a small plug (no affiliation of course), I got loads of great help from Jen at MSAR safety (www. msar-safety.com), she was great at getting a set of belts that match my requirements, including one that would work with HANS correctly.

pretty sure the 964RS only has one original mounting hole for harness in rear as standard as the shells were for a single harness strap that split into 2 to go over the shoulders.

If that makes sense...too much wine [:-]

obviously you can put others in just make sure in the strongest places - think mine are seat well area

Mine (a slightly earlier chassis number) had the same set up as described. I had the retaining plates welded into the rear shelf to take the inner shoulder straps and use the original outer mounting points for the outer straps.

just checked my car, it too is the same, i guess they were based on the same shell. i would repeat, dont fit harnesses unless you have a cage, and if you have a cage, better to mount the belts on that. and i think all belt sets that you buy will have mounting bracket for welding included, certainly mt schroth ones do.

Thanks. All your comments have been passed on.

Martin, I only haven't commented because my car came with a set of recent harnesses so I've never needed to know --- but if you need any pics ? Please ask.
