A huge blowup from the engine bay!

While I was accelerating against my mate's 4S, my 2001 996 Turbo (Tiptronic S) had a huge blowup. The rpm was nearly 6-7k at about 70mph and it must've been on the 3rd gear. Suddenly, with a huge 'bang', came a huge clowd of white smoke from the rear, and green liquid was pouring out all over the place. Needless to say, I got the car towed to a Porsche centre and they r gonna have a look at it first thing on Monday. Has anyone had the similar problem and what exactly went wrong??!! My friend told me it's either the coolant tank pipe or the radiator, but I'm worried that it might be (or could lead to) a much serious problem. Help me out~!!
 
The green stuff can only be coolant.
I presume you stopped quickly and turned the engine off, since it will overheat quickly with no water.
You don't say which end the stuff was coming from.

The radiators are at the front. It is possible you hit something (bird) or a stone could have holed the radiator.
If the water was coming from the back, then it could be something simple like a hose.
Or could you have hit something?
The underneath of the car is pretty smooth but there is an oild/water intercooler somewhere underneath.
The turbos are water cooled, so I suppose one of these could self destruct, but I have not heard of it.

Whatever the issue, 2 mins underneath it on the ramps will give a quick indication.
It is most likely to be a hose that has failed, it has either split or come off. A new one will be quite cheap (in Porsche terms), although there may be a bit of labour since some are not so easy to get to.

I expect you'll get a call on Monday morning, then you'll know. But I wouldn't start panicking yet.
 
Thanks for your message. Yeah, I stopped immediately and switched the engine off. The liquid was dropping from the lefthand side, and was still leaking after nearly 3 hours on the tow truck..[&:] It may be the hose or something relatively simple, but I hope it hasn't caused any damage to the engine or anything..[:eek:]

this happened to a mate of mine in his 2001 turbo

the rads and coolant stuff is all at the front and they are prone to corrosion cos of all the weather and abuse they take being at the front.

hence they give up when a fracture or weak spot appears and it dumps all the coolant.

you should be able to get it replaced as it is recognised as a mfrs problem so good luck and I hope that is all it is!!
