I,m looking at replacing my alternator I have found a Bosch approved rebuilt one in the USA which has been up rated to 200amp
Is there any advantage in this over the standard 115amp version

the steering rack tie rod ends the rods themselves is aftermarket as good as OEM is there a particular make that's good

thanks[:)]

The key to the statement on the alternator is " up to " make sure it is as good as they say it is. Why not stick with the one you have? Also when buying parts like track rod ends etc just pick a reputable supplier and stick with them. I use Euro and GSF as well as Dingbro.

IME Aftermarket stuff tends to vary so much. Some of it is almost as good as OEM, and quite a bit simply has a lick of paint and will be worse than what came off in no time (conveniently just after the warranty period runs out on a low mileage car).

An alternator has brushes and bearings - nothing else to wear, so a rebuilt one is fine.

I think the standard 115w one if fine unless you are running a SERIOUS sound system.

Pattern parts from one of the well known specialists are probably ok, especially for relatively low miles per year cars that most have become now.

I can buy a rebuilt one for £80 and the 200 amp one for £150

ok the bearings and brushes are only about £30 but factor in removing the stator to soda blast and zinc plate the cooling fan etc the price to rebuild is far more

Plus I could sell my existing one so not worth doing it myself

There's not much point in having a higher output alternator unless you also change to a bigger battery to store all those lovely amps it's churning out. Given that the battery on the 944 is size constrained by the space it sits in, you are probably not going to get one with the right capacity and charge acceptance characteristics to suit a 200A alternator. So i would suggest going for a reman 115A version.

Fella up here in the frozen sorts them out for about £45, as said not much to go wrong with them apart from bearings and diode packs.

Are they re-plated and soda blasted ?
I want it to look new

Ken no, he just fixes them then sticks them back together.................should have realised that as you are on a "mission" and good luck to you, admirable [;)]

OK Alternator ordered now I need some Headlights

Any recomendations?

must be legal
must drop in No Mods

are the direct wiring kits worthwhile?

many thanks[:)]

Thats a big amp increase for the wiring to cope with, it could start a fire.
It won't cause a fire, a shorted cable may or the wrong size fuse with a large load may start a fire but a higher capacity alternator will not.

Anyone know which headlights are best? Is it worth buying the Hella E Codes?
Should I fit the direct wiring harness?

Any help much appreciated ...[:)]

My personal opinion is that even a new car would have benefited from a good quality direct wiring harness.
