A Moody RS

Hi Chaps

I need some guidance, having had a couple of 911's in the past a SC, 3.2 Carrera and Turbo 2 not to mention other classic cars that I currently have. by chance I bought a 911 RS recreation built from a 1972 911E 2.4 and since I've done some homework to find that it's a pretty good copy. However I would need to spend about 12/13k to end up with a very good one i.e correct engine, brakes, wheels seats and so on.

My concern is that whilst I can't afford the real deal as I'am only a humble salesman I dont want to spend good money only to have what would be a very nice but still only a copy to then be frowned upon by the big boys with proper RS's.

It might seem like a strange concern, but I've never had anything fake before, well apart from Doris a few years back, nor have I tried to be anything I'm not.

I don't think the guys with a real RHD £100K plus 2.7RS are going to worry about your car.

There are quite a few fair reps out there, very few really good ones; those are changing hands through dealers at over £50K.

If your car has the wrong engine, seats, wheels and brakes you could be looking at closer to £20K to put those right, more if you want a real 2.7RS motor. Beware of pouring lots of money into a car that will not necessarily be improved in direct relation to the investment. Is your car silver by any chance?
 
From your post I do not understand what you want from your 'RS'. If it is the driving experince as Mr Moss guesses (and I hope it it is - and not an ego boster) you don't have to spend the 20k as the same Mr Moss accurately predicts, you just have to make as light and as torquey as you can with what you have.

If you are trying to make it look as close to a 73 RS 2.7 as possible - you will be spending money and I would ask for what reason. People like me will come up to it and realise you do not have the correct glass fitted and shun you (err - joke) .
 
Thanks guys, If think I might have mis led you, I want a car that I can enjoy and in my mind the 911 RS has to be one of the best cars ever built, i.e. looks, performance and drivability. If anyone ever asked me if it was a real RS I would be honest but if a jobs worth doing its worth doing right. I asked the question because I've never had anything that's not what it apears and I dont want to come accross as Charlie Big Potatoes trying to be someone I'm not.

In my mind I would like to make it as close as I can because I like the original RS and everthing about it. I want a 2.7 because of the increased performance and the resale value it could have at a later date, I just dont want to throw money away that I cant recoupe.

I deal in Jaguar E-type's and when I went to buy one at a Auction last week it turned out to a complete shed then I saw the Silver RS there I had to have it for myself. Do you know the car nick?

Harry, I don't know the car but noticed it had changed hands and was for sale with a Jag specialist the other day, so that must be you [;)]
 
It is a bit negative to call it moody. It is a Porsche. Don't call it a rep either, it just downgrades your enjoyment of it. Make sure that you keep on top of the corrosion and whenever it needs work, take the opportunity to upgrade to 2.7 and find some period seats for example. As for wheels, I have 6's, 7's and 8's and also a set of magnesium minilites. Now which are the right ones?
Drive it hard, don't mollycoddle it.
 
Think you have the right approach. Don't think of it as an RS replica but an early 911 with some of the RS spirit and looks. Make it an honest car with good performance and handling and you should not lose a great deal while having a car you can probably enjoy more than you could with real 2.7 RS's given their value.
 
I wouldn't worry too much about the fake image. Many of the "real" RS cars you see around are like Trigger's brush anyway ;)
 
Hi Harry, good to hear that it's gone to a good home, I spent quite a while building that one..although I did see it advertied already!..Keeper or not?

I just want to know how good it is underneath and look at the options of doing a couple of extra jobs, if its as good underneath as it looks then I'm 100% keeping it. I would like to talk to you about it if thats possible.
 
Harry....I know where you're coming from. It takes time to get to know any particular car.

I wouldn't want to spend money on a car until I knew exactly what I had and then whether it was worth it.

Get some 8's and 9's and wedge them on for starters.
