A nasty whinning noise

I run a 1988 944 Lux in black with 118,000mls on the clock, it has developed an irritating whinning noise from the rear at anything over 20mph but below this it is fine, am I right in thinking this is the gearbox as I have read a lot about this problem and that it can be solved by using a new type of oil, think its called Swepco, has anybody tried this, is it any good? I would appreciate your views, cheers.

I haven't used it, but have heard feedback from many who do, and it has reduced the whine for most. A 'whiney box' has often been considered an achilles heel of older 944s, so ultimately a rebuild could be on the cards somewhere down the line.

My own personal theory is that a lot of non-enthusiast owners do not realise the gear oil should be changed every 4 years or 48k miles. I change mine every 2 years as I'm quite happy to pay £30 in oil rather than £££££ for a rebuild []
