A new arrival (3.2, not baby)

After my previous posts (selling 993, offered on 3.2 which turned out to be an Insurance Total Loss) I finally picked up a 3.2 at the weekend.

Guards red, linen (cream) leather, totally original, low mileage and FSH. Drives like it left the factory last week.

This is the first 3.2 I have ever driven! And wow, really fantastic. Against the 993 Carrera S it can hold it's head incredibly highly, with only lack of air conditioning (which would have been very useful this weekend) and a noticiable lack of surge at the top end of the rev range against my re-mapped 300 bhp 993 (having said that, still gets a really good move on).

On paper it appers like a significant trade down (twice as old, half the value, not as fast, less equipment and so on) but in reality there is nothing in it. The build quality feels just as good with some things, like the indicator stalks action seeming even higher quality. Sound is wonderful, steering feel amazing.

It is a measure of how good they are as standard that my list of things to do to it consists of next to nothing, get Wayne Schofield of Chip Wizards to do a live re-map, get Chris Franklyn of Centre Gravity to do a full geometry and corner weight set up, touch up some very minor paint issues on one sill (not visible but came out in the PPI) and have the black centres of the Fuchs wheels colour coded to match the Guards Red paintwork.

I like my cars more or loss original but are there any other things that experienced owners would highly recommend as either minor enhancements or absolute must do's?

Cheers

Get a decent flowing exhaust fitted before you have a live remap, you'll get the best out if it then. Probably worth having dyno'd before any of this so you have a starting point.

Hayward and Scott, Turbo Thomas or M&K are good places to start for a non standard exhaust depending on budget. They should offer extra fruitiness and some power/response increase.

Congrats on the car, be nice to see some pix!
I would ech what Big Nige has said, re the exhaust. I went for a B&B in the end.
My car has been fully remapped by Wayne but only after Id finished (for now) with all other engine mods.
(MAF/induction etc etc)
Wayne is a top bloke and really good at his job, I would recomend him anytime.
Theres no going back after a 3.2![;)]

cheers
Adam

Welcome to 3.2 ownership [:D]
Some possible additional upgrades: -
1) Engine and gearbox mounts are worth replacing (WEVO and Pelican/or Early 911) - even though It's a low mileage car still over twenty yaer old
2) WEVO short shift
3) Turbo tie-ends

Enjoy

Thanks. I'd heard about the Turbo Tie Ends but not the other stuff. That may be a little further down the running order.

No problem

Just wondered what mine's worth. Sounds similar, 24k miles, FSH, Excellent condition.

Mine's not quite such low mileage - 53k which I am not going to complain at after 20 years.

As a guide, I went to a PCGB Regional Concours a few weeks ago and there was a chap who entered the Concours who had an amazing 3.2 and it was for sale. How he didn't make the top 3 in the visitors class I'll never know (there was another chap there I knew who also judges concours and he similarly wondered which way the judges had been looking).

I digress, it was a 1988 car, Guards Red, black leather, completely original including Blaupunkt Toronto and so on, 41k miles, FSH and I went over it in a lot of detail as I was considering buying it. Without checking the underside of course I would describe it as as close to perfect as you can get (as good as my previous 993 which in three PCGB Concours events came best in class twice and runner up once and that was 9 years newer). He wanted £21,000. We haggled and hagged before he came down to £20,500. I made an offer a little lower than this and he didn't reply so obviously wasn't prepared to budge. In truth I think it was certainly worth £20k and there was an argument for paying the £20,500 as there could be few better cars in the UK.

That might help you with a guide price for your car.

I paid significantly less for mine (as in a few thousand less) which had slightly more miles (53k vs 41k) and I would describe as 90-95% as good body work and interior though is mechanically perfect. Not even the smallest oil leak for instance which has got to be rare!

No, I won't be able to make Blenheim. It's a bit of a treck for me and besides I have family things on that weekend which can't be escaped.
