A question about wheel offsets

I wonder if someone could help clarify a question which came up on Rennlist a day or so ago regarding wheel offsets. The question was posed regarding the fitment of 9J 16" ET70 rear wheels from a 993 to a narrow bodied 964. On the 964 it seems highly desireable to fit at least a 15mm spacer with these wheels in order to avoid contact with the right side oil pipe in the wheel well.

Looking at PET reveals rear wheel offsets ranging from 40mm to 70mm fitted to the 993 but no apparent evidence of spacers being fitted with those wheels. Are different hubs used?? I know the 993 suspension is completely different to the 964.

Could someone help put my mind at rest??? Maurice???
