A question of Colour ...........

According to Tony Corletts' book - 'Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera / The last of the evolution' - the colour of my car isn't Guards Red at all, but Indian Red [ 80K G1 ]. Guards was never used for the 3.2.

I didn't know that!

Q. Pesumably it's recorded on the vehicle, somewhere?

What's the true name of my colour. The number is described as L661 and it is a blue/grey colour but it must have a proper name like slate blue or something. Any ideas?

There's a 1983/1984 [ NO 'L'] 661 / ***** / X6 - Slate Blue - Metalic.

I 'picked-up' the colour from your Avatar, assuming that's your car shown, as below. Is that anything like it ...........

Ian - I'll certainly go along with that arguemet, however, the book states quite categorically: 'Although many believe otherwise. Porsche never produced the Carrera in Guards Red.'

There is India Red, Indian Red, Kiln Red [Matallic], Ruby Red [Metallic], Garnet Red [Metallic], Cherry/Carmine Red, Maraschino Red [Metallic] and Velvet Red [Metallic] but no Guards Red.

Anybody got a Spectrograph .............................................
 
I think my reply wasn't as clear as I had thought as I agree with you. What I was trying to say was that although Porsche called the colour Indian Red on that model the man on the street always referred to it as Guards Red.

I had one at the time (my first ever Porsche and still one of my favourites) and I always thought it was Guards Red. In fact if you hadn't pointed it out I would still think it was a Guards Red car I had.

I think all the different versions of Guards Red that Porsche used over the years helps to explain why these reds are such a sod to match when having touch up work done.

Ian - Not at all. Your point was perfectly well made. I was that 'man in the street'. I have always assumed that the only [ Bright ] Red that Porsche ever used was Guards. The India, Kiln and Indian Reds look very, very similar. Hence my comment about a Spectrograph.

Mind you, I am somewhat blinkered, as far as I'm concerned, Porsche only ever used one colour for all their cars and that was .............. Guards Red. Wouldn't want anything else!

PS - I shall probably now get a shed load of posts saying 'ow 'orrible a Porsche looks in Guards Red!

LOL.....I call mine two-tone Guards Red after all the paint jobs! The best paint is the original stuff, you get a reward when you polish it. I've gone right off laquered finishes.

LOL.....I call mine two-tone Guards Red after all the paint jobs! The best paint is the original stuff, you get a reward when you polish it. I've gone right off laquered finishes.
bones - Tell me about it. Practically every car I've owned has been red. It fades, it discolours, it's difficult to match ....................... and if you're lookin' for imperfections, try putting it under daylight fluorescent or orange street lighting!

I've also always tried to keep away from metallic's and lacquer's. Give me a good, deep, standard finish paint any time.

I'm sure my right hand door has been blow over at some time. It's been done well. No signs of over-spray or feathered edges. I should imagine the door was stripped out first. However, the colour is just that tiny little bit off. Probably used Guards Red instead of Indian Red.
