A question on crank timing ????

Hi guys , for any of you that do your own timing belts , can you tell me where you set up the OT line on the fly wheel in the top window on the bellhouseing relative to the pointed tab (ie do you line it up level or just enough that it’s in the window as my OT line is around 4mm away from the pointed tab in the window and not bang inline with it.

I set mine with a dial gauge but can’t remember if it was the beginning of top dead centre or if it was the pause before the crank wants to return.

Just wanting to get the timing as spot on as i possibly can.

Have added a photo with a arrow as to where my mark is at present.

thanks all

I always set the TDC mark right at the edge of the timing mark as the engine approaches TDC-this is where the camshaft pulley/casting marks also are in line.
I don't have a long extension for my DTI.

Hi vitesse, do you mean the OT line on the crank just before touching the pointed tab?

Whereas mines about 4ish mm away from touching it like in the photo?

thanks
Daniel

Dan,
I follow Clarkes Garage guide -rotate engine after the OT mark appears until the line on flywheel following is right against the cast in edge of the housing-
I now use one of those small 3 LED pushbutton torches taped to the end of an extra long screwdriver to illuminate the aperture/timing marks.

Thanks mate, I did check and I actually did do the timing spot on the first time , just tightened up the tensioner a fraction.
