A Sad State of affairs

How sad I find it reading this Boxter forum, We are lucky enough to own what has to be said is a fabulous motor car, but we are all disapointed with poor paint work poor engineering poor service from our choosen Porsche Dealer, both on sales and service. I Have owned two Toyota's both MR2's, so I have been spoiled. My first MR2 was the original little wedge shaped MK1. I visited the dealer in Ipswich who gave me a demonstrater to take home for the weekend! I love the car and ordered one on the Monday. when the car arived I was treated like a lord. and the following servicing visits were a pleasure. On one occastion when my car was being serviced I was loaned the newley launched Lexus 500 for the day! I chaned the car when the new shape MR2 was launched ( the little dino shape) once again the whole experance was a joy. can you imagine taking your Boxter in for service and being loaned a 911 Turbo for the day! Or wishing to buy a 911 and being loaned one for the weekend. I look forward to the day when Porsche's crown slips and the salesman have to work for their business. I just wish the CEO of Porsche UK would take the trouble to read these forums.

They may well read it ...but will it make one blind bit of a differance ,To be fair I have not had any great issues with the cars I have had, possibly because I never keep them long enough[:D] I have never been offered a loan Porsche car in all those years or even a invite to drive the latest model. From what you read and to fair it is the negative that gets talked about most of the time but you do get the impresion that we should be all gratefull that they alow us to buy a car from them,to be fair all the cars I buy are second hand, ie 1 year old and not from the main dealer but use them for warranty and service ,so perhaps what I get is all I deserve [;)]

Sorry but i have to agree......I waited for 6 months for mine to come and during that time i read the hard backed sales bumf about reliability and top quality this and that. Now after 3 1/2 years of ownership, i have to say that overall i've been disappointed.
I posted a message a while ago about a wheel bearing type rumble from the rear N/S of my car which started at about 6,500 miles. Took it to OPC (160 mile round trip) to be told they think it was the tyres on there way out.
Now done 9,500 and they are being changed this week, so will be able to tell then.
Got a horrible feeling it's the rear N/S wheel bearing though!!.......At 9,500 thats bad in my book........and actually the rumble started at 6,500 as stated above!!!
I know i don't do high mileage but the car IS NOT left standing more than a week or two at the most.
I'll let you know the verdict!!

Showing my age here, but I do remember the big crash in 1987 I think, and they couldn't give them away for love or money, cos no one had any! I do believe that this spurred on Porsche to come up with the Boxster, so there was a more affordable model available.
Trouble is, I didn't have the money!!

Bear in mind that people are far more likely to post bad news rather than good news on internet forums. So, you may be gettng a distorted picture.

We've had four Boxsters since 1997 and each one has been used as a regular day to day car, with a few track days. They have all been superb to use and own. And, we've had:
- No quality issues
- No mechanical problems
- No paintwork problems
- Excellent service from our OPC
- Build and engineering integrity identical to the 996/997

I to owned a new shape MR2 and, the MR2 forum was full of negative comments the main one was the cat failure which totally destroyed a few engines at the time, nearly put me of buying one..

we have had 5 Boxsters .. all pretty much Perfect ... prior to that (a long time ago 3 * 944's) and now double up on the Box with a Cayenne too.. I lik Reading OPC .. however .. I have to say it was ALL about the sales guy who looked after us for the last 6 years . he just left .. we shall see what happens in the future ..

I have to say these forums represent a narrow perspective of ownership as its always the "sorry tale" .. who posts the "I love it, its percect and I just had a fun drive post EVERY day" .. If you want sorrow go read a Ferrari or TVR forum .. they are " low loader came .. car went .. again" post every day

I wonder, unlike some of the previous posts, how many people are like me that don't buy a car with a view to exchanging it every 2 or three years? If you change a car that frequently and if that is the norm, no wonder Porsche do not have to worry about build quality.

I saved for many years, now in my late 50s, in order to by the Boxster, spurred on by the promise of years of trouble free reliable motoring and it has been far from that. After 30000 miles Two RMSs ( one after only a week) a complete headlight washer pop up thingy which sprang a leak and drained all the fluid onto the garage floor, the brushed aluminium trim around the exhaust cutout to the rear grill which corroded and a front suspension bush. The aim was to keep the car into my and its old age but I do wonder whether it will last that long.

This is in stark contrast to our V reg Celica which is just coming up to 120000 miles and still going strong. ( by the way the extended warranty which I took out on the Celica for its 4th and fifth years at about £300 a year was a full manufacturers equivalent to the original warranty)

However, having said all that if I was doing it again I would still buy one because its the perfect car.

I've never purchased anything with the thought of selling it, including my Boxster. Next May will be our 8th anniversary and will probably see 100,00 miles on the clock.

A new hood, blow over and a new set of alloys in a couple of years should do us for another ten years.

GOOD NEWS!......Had tyres replaced and rumble gone!

Don't put YOKOHAMA's on!.....There fine until they wear down to about 3-4 mill. then you get a wheel bearing type rumble!
m13.gif

Tyre fitter said they'd "stepped" on the inside edge and it seems that was what was causing the rumble. Plus they only lasted 9,500 miles.
Don't get me wrong, i love my car...probably too much, as i have all my previous cars.
The BOXSTER is the best handling car i've owned.
It would just be nice to have a few years total trouble free motoring, as everytime something isn't right i have to travel a 160 mile round trip.
I agree with Jim, not all of us can change our cars every year or two and some of us even have to get M.O.T.'s.

I envey you all wether you are having trouble or not, having been baned from driving for 6 months ( now into my 4th month) I am having withdrawal symtoms. It started with the shakes then come the nightmares, "god the nightmares are the worst" I wake up in a cold sweat having been dreaming that my Boxter was crushed as punishment for not being able to name the driver of my other car. The relief as I remember that it was a six months ban and a £1,000 fine!

Lucky motoring to you all, see you back on the road Christmas day!!
