A Small Whine!

Just took the care for a run today and it might be me but im sure i can hear a small whining noise when i release the accelerator.Im also getting a bit of vibration through the car at around 80 mph.I dont think its the wheels out of balance as the whole car starts to vibrate! The whining noise sounds like its coming from the rear somewhere. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

It's quite normal to get some noise from the gearbox, so it's not something I'd worry about unless it changes. If you want to get paranoid take out the boot carpet and go for a drive, you'll hear all sorts...[;)]

[:D] Sorry Peter, I had to laugh at that. I`m sitting here with around £4K just waiting for the `right car` to come along. The only 3 944s I`ve driven have had major issues (whining, rumbling, clunking and rot or all of the aforementioned). All were advertised as `excellent, immaculate and first to see will buy`. I`m beginning to wonder if its money down the pan. [8|]

I think (or hope) what Peter is trying to say is these are cars were designed and built in the 1980's. They are old cars and are much noisier than modern vehicles, even when everything is in perfect working order. However there are a few known issues like really noisy gearboxes etc which you want to try and avoid for the ake of your wallet.

Luckily (and wisely) you are already on the right track by testing a number of different cars. Hopefully you will soon work out what is a normal noisy 80's car and what is about to explode []. When you find a really good car you will know the diffeence - they are a world apart from the cheaper, less loved example [&o]

Diver , I hope you`re right as I fear my Porsche bubble is going to burst. I`ve wanted one for years (it will be a 2nd car) but sometimes I wonder if the only thing going for it is the badge. I`m going to keep looking until January when there might be a few `desperation sales` and I might get someones pride and joy as opposed to somebody elses `problematic moneypit`.
I have the money and can afford to keep one I`m just having doubts now, especially when you see what you `can` get for £5k.

Sorry for the thread hijack buddy, hopefully the whine thing won`t be anything major.

there are still good ones out there - but they will all need money spent on them

My gearbox is lovely & quiet (until you take the boot carpet up ;) )

Both my 924S's had noisy gearboxes

The car on acceleration is sound! All you get ia a nice whirr from the engine taking off. Its just when i took it for a spin down the motorway yesterday it sounded a little whiny when i released the gas.Could be nothing to worry about but as this is my first Porsche i thought i'd better ask you guys who undoubtedly have had experience! It is quite noisey anyway from the 911 cup alloys and low profiles which have been fitted. As the car was built for speed and not comfort i did expect a rough ride.Especially when all i have to compare it to is my brothers nissan 3.0 turbo. That too is a rough ride through the suspension! Anyway i've booked into my local garage for a good going over and adjustments to the handbrake so fingers crossed he wont find anything out of the ordinary!! Thanks for the help guys

I think it's just part of the character of the car, it is a 20 year old sports car after all and the gearbox is right under the boot floor (defining the cars character in so many wonderful ways), combine that with the restrained standard exhaust and you're bound to hear it. Even with my white car all stripped out I enjoyed the noise, it isn't exactly unpleasent (I know I've posted this vid before, but this car just might get on my nerves [;)]).

I've had quite a few gearboxes over the years and they've all been different, my 944S for example is noisier in 4th I think, the S2 box in the Lux is noisy on deceleration.

Brian, don't give up, you should be able to get a nice car for your money and you will not regret it. If you're close to any forum members here you might be able to persuade them to take you for a ride in a good example so you can see what's you should be able to expect.

If the worst happens a gearbox can be changed quickly and pretty cheaply, but in my experience it's only the Lux boxes that are a bit fragile and only then if 'abused' [:)].

Just a quick update! The car went into my local garage and came back today with only one pre MOT fault! The rear brake caliper rigid brake lines were corroded and thats it!!!Im pretty impressed to say the least.I dont know why but i got a wee bit paranoid during the course of the day with her been 22 years old and all but hey ho guess these cars really are bomb proof! I also had two prospective buyers (not that im looking to sell) looking round her while she was sat in the garage!I really am chuffed to bits with the car now!

Delighted to hear that [:D]. MOT time can be a pretty nerve racking experience on any classic. I'm going to have to put my white car through one soon, and have a gut feeling there's going to be quite a bit of work required (not that anything should have worn out as it's not moved under its on steam for the last year [:(]).

if you have checked that the wheels are balanced I would next check your wheel bearings.

Take the car at a steady speed from straight ahead to a long steady LH or RH bend like a slip road off the motorway.

. If the intensity of vibration or sound increases or decreases the chances are high its a rear wheel bearing at fault.
If the bend is to the left and the sound increases it should mean the off side bearing is faulty as you are loading it more. Visa versa obviously.

If that makes no difference try maintaining a steady speed about 40mph in 4th gear
If the car lurches forward and back on a steady throttle it could mean your clutch centre is disintergrating. That would cause whine and vibration.

presume that the CV joints and wishbone bushes etc are checked in the MOT.

Its more of a vibration in a straight line doing around 80mph.I figure it may well be the rear wheels out of balance which after christmas i'll find out when i get some new rubber on her.Cheers for the info though Peanut its always handy to know attributes to the car.

yes but that can still be caused by the clutch centre breaking up and the vibration being transmitted throughout the transmission. The test i suggested will eliminate the clutch being the source. I assumed that you had already done the obvious and balanced the wheels.
What tyres did you decide on in the end? I've used Khumos and they are pretty good for dry grip lowish noise and wear but not brilliant in the wet it has to be said but for £50 a pop they sure are cheep

Im still bouncing between Khumos and Falkens.I got quoted for all four corners doing with Khumo ecsta's at a "reasonable" £360 fitted. But on Camskill's i can get Falkens delivered for £300.After reading up on peoples experience's its a tough choice! But i will keep you posted on my choice and most importantly the cost!!

Have you looked at Blackcircles.com? They list the Kumho KH15's for £65 fitted (215 wide which I use). They seem to be a good tyre, they definately last well and the grip seems pretty good for what they are.

Yesterday I temporarily fitted a spare set of wheels as I need to refurbish my others and now have a pair of Trayal tyres on the front (what do you mean you haven't heard of them? They're some of the best tyres made in serbia). Can't say I'm looking forward to driving to work tomorrow, but it's an incentive to get them sorted asap.

It's a spelling mistake by the English-as-a-second-language manufacturer. They meant TRIAL as that's what it will be keeping the car on the road with them [:D][:D]

Anyway - what colour the rejunvenated rims, Mr. Empson?

[:D][:D][:D] funnily enough that possibility did occur to me

I'm leaving the colour alone (although I am bored with the current colour), I was tempted to go matt black but don't fancy doing all four again without some decent weather. The problem with the existing wheels is that I did not take the old tyres off when painting them and it seems there was internal corrosion on two of them, so they leak terribly. Fingers crossed it should be an easy fix, but at least I have some spares now if I need them.

I've realised I currently have 16 wheels (excluding 2 space savers) and have sold 8 this year but bought another 8... [:)]
Oh and my Kumho's are 225's and not the 215's I mentioned above.
