A tale of two tyres

Having been concerned about the rear Michelin Kojaks on the car and receiving an advisory at the last MOT I decided to source some new ones. My 996 has the MO30 sports chassis with stiffened dampers, springs, 10mm lowering and lots of rear camber which wears the inside shoulder of the tyre. Being a bit of a tightwad I had the tyres swapped on the rims a few k miles ago to put the wear to the outside.
Anyway, I asked the Leeds OPC to price me some up and they said they were like rocking horse. They managed to source some at a tyre brokers for £750 for the pair which I knew was well overpriced. They would not budge on price as 'there is no profit on tyres'. I told them to come back with a sensible price when supply was more plentiful and needless to say have heard nothing since!![:D]
At Chateau Impney last week I spoke to Steve Dolby on the Michelin stand. He asked me to email the tyre details and he would make enquiries. He also said that ATS was one of their distributors.

As it happened I passed my local ATS the day after and called in. The salesman rang a few mysterious numbers and after muttering words such as, Jesus, how much?, is that the best you can do and they're not cheap etc etc put the phone down and said with much sucking in of breath and wincing -'are you sitting down?'
I braced myself as he said 'they are £658 supplied and fitted!!'[:)]

Well being as tight as a crabs posterior (which is watertight) I immediately tried to get a better deal but the contrary sod would not budge. OK I said with feigned reluctance- get me some in. The deal done and the M&S credit card well hammered I left feeling rather chuffed.
I then contacted Steve Dolby at Michelin to save him any grief finding me some tyres. Well, he said, if you forward me your receipt from ATS we have a deal on at the mo which gives you £50 worth of Sainsburys vouchers.[:)] Thinking it might be a wise day to buy a lottery ticket I thanked him profusely and the receipt was scanned and on his computer screen in 30 secs flat!!

Theres more!!- went to ATS this morning and asked them to check the existing tyres first. They're OK for another 1000 miles yet said the greasy overalled tyre fitter as he expertly brandished his depth gauge.[:)]

So here I am with a pair of lovely Michelins in storage at ATS[:D] whilst I frantically drive round like a man possessed in order to get the last 1000 miles out of the rear slicks.

PS Anybody want to buy a pair of brand new Michelin Pilot Sport N3s for £700?[:D][:D]

What a story Chris. Didn't know whether to feel sorry for you but, on reflection, I think those Michelins have your name all over them. Your jewel of a 996 deserves some new tyres, ok you might want to wait the winter out, but imagine how you'd feel in the Spring! How good they'd look gift wrapped on Christmas morning.

Go for it. After all, a few events in the Autumn will eat into those 1000 miles.

Paul.

pps. Just read the Beamish post. Sorry to hear about Linda's mum. Hope all goes well.
