A Wheel Dilemma
A wheel dilemma
Hi all not sure if I’m doing this correctly as it’s my first post since joining. I recently purchased my first Porsche from Cridfords ( very nice people to deal with ) a gen 1 997 Carrera 2 without pasm. It has been fitted with gen 2 19inch Carrera S alloys. I am thinking about replacing them with a set of Fuchs. Should I go for 18 inch bearing in mind its just a passive suspension set up. I do find the 19’s a little "crashy " over bumps but as this is my first 911 I’ve nothing to compare to. Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks

Hi Pete
You can see my Fuch's (18", purchased / fitted via JZM...perhaps worth giving them a call and ask their opinion?) on my CS.

As with most things Porsche, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder re a variety of things, such as difference in ride quality b/w PASM and non PASM, and 18" v 19" wheels. Personally I noticed a difference b/w both of these "variables" when I was test driving (must have driven 13 or 14 different cars, with different suspension and wheel combinations), and noted a slightly crisper turn in on the smaller wheel size. As you mention, larger diameter wheels have a smaller side wall hence a firmer ride....but some prefer the look and like a firmer ride so it's not a problem. There's no right or wrong answer here, go with what works for you. If possible, test drive a few 997's with a mix of wheel sizes (most 997's seem to be on 19's so you may have to look around a bit for an 18" fitment). Good luck (the Fuch's will look great I'm sure!)

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the info. Your wheels look great by the way.My 997 is midnight blue and the silver Fuchs seem to look great with dark paint. This is the only 911 I’ve ever driven so I don’t really know how it compares , especially against pasm equipped cars. How do you manage to blag so many different rides to make a comparison ? Lol

Personally I would not go smaller than the 19" wheels. I had them on my 997 and they 'looked' just right.

I have 20" on my 981 Cayman and the ride quality is absolutely fine for me - that is inspite of a bad back. I haveetravelled long distances in Europe with no issues at all. No complaint all from boss in the passenger seat.

I don't have PASM on my car either and I believe that this suspension set up is firmer that a PASM car with its switched off.

Hi, thanks for your thoughts. I’m beginning to think I should stay with the 19’s. I’ve been offered a set of Fuchs with tyres and as my current 19’s have good tyres it would also give me a spare set. The cost to change to new 18’s and tyres would be about another £1300 which I could spend on suspension.

Two small changes I made to my 997 gen 1 turbo was fitting adjustable anti roll bars and pagid RS29 front pads
made an excellent change to the handling and breaking
worth looking into

Pete1961, did you get a set of Fuchs wh els for your car?

I ask because I have the same colour as yours and am interested in some too. If you have I would love to see a picture of it.

I’m not sure for me whether I’d prefer the black/silver wheels over all silver Or not.

Kind regards,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathon,

No I didn’t get them, I dithered around too much and by the the time I made my mind up they were gone. My own fault ??
Im still looking though, ive current got the 19inch Gen 2 Carrera S wheels but as I haven’t got pasm i might consider buying 18’s

Please let me know if you do get them.

Cheers

Pete

Ah that's a shame Pete.
We've currently got the same wheels then. If I can't find a used set of those Fuchs wheels, then I'm going to buy some the clones from somewhere like Design911. They have quite a good copy and offer both silver and black/silver options and in both 18 and 19" options too.

The one they sell at design911 are genuine Fuchs I believe. The 18 inch ones are £2820 for a set , I think it’s a little above 4 grand for 19s. You can click on a link on the wheel description to see some pictures of them fitted.
