A0R 944 Turbo Gearbox LSD Lockup

Hi guys,

Just finishing up my box rebuild for my 944T.

We sorted the bearing issue out, got a larger bearing and my buddy
machined it down to a .02 interference fit, job done !

We're just looking at the LSD now (we thought we could pull the diff
later without pulling the whole box out down the line,
but it's now become obvious we'd have to split the box to remove it,
and that wouldn't be possible without removing her from the car ...)
So we want to figure if the diff is the full potato before putting
everything in place.

Anyone know what is the expected pre-load torque for the factory LSD?

We have the box assembled dry on the bench, and when we use the
torque spanner, what kind of reading would be correct/in range ?
 
Do you have the factory manual and 951 supplement? Its a 40% type, so not particularly fierce, but for anything beyond that Id advise downloading the manuals (and maybe glancing at Clark Fletchers site, too).

A rebuild will be very expensive. From memory, many of the spares parts numbers are prefixed 917!
 
I have to disagree. Most of the parts have Audi part numbers's. A friend of mine bought some spare parts from a local Audi dealer. Same parts but with different price tags.
 
It was the clutch discs which were 917 parts, I believe, but this was in 1992 Olli so it is a vague recollection at best and these parts may have been superseded long ago.
 
We had a quick look through the factory manual, but the load mentioned was for the diff out of the box held in a vice,
being turned by a torque spanner.

I was hoping someone would have a ballpark measurement for when it's in the car (save us having to split the box),
usually I've heard of guys jacking the car up and measuring the torque to lockup on the free wheel or such.

I thought I found a thread a while back somewhere with a measurement in lbs/ft, but I'll be damned if I can find it now when I need it.

It's definitely working as an LSD, we're just not sure if it's anywhere close to factory spec or not ...

when I bought my car - it was lifted clear of the ground in JMG Bournemouth on the 2 post lift for the purpose of checking the LSD.

This is not scientific, but I would describe the load required to rotate the wheel while someone was holding the opposite wheel as "similar to if the brake was being applied very lightly" there was no excessive torque required.

It was the same as my other 951.

An open diff car would have zero resistance and the other wheel if not restrained would turn the opposite direction to the wheel being rotated.

I have found the OE LSD very reliable in a number of cars, and it transforms the traction out of a Tee Junction [:)]
