A9 Roadworks

Then you have a choice either pick up the A9 Dunblane / Stirling / Cumbernauld then onto M74 - M6 to Englandshire, or M90 south to Edinburgh (going over the impressive Queensferry crossing), then onto Edinburgh and several scenic routes to take you south to Newcastle then pick up the M1.
None of this is time saving, however you will drive some draw dropping roads & see some immense scenery especially the Granton on Spey to Balmoral leg

Take it from a local with experience of this route south.
Best driving road south imo.
