About this mountain biking mullarky..........

I've just bought one of these new fangled full suspension mountain bike thingies. It is my best intention (as it's still new) to get a bit fitter than I am (not very). I've ridden a couple of miles, with the kids, and although I enjoyed it, I've realised that I need to be a LOT fitter than I am. I know a few of you guys like to mess about on these pedal powered things, so when I'm feeling a bit fitter, I might well join you for a ride somewhere! As I say though, I need to get a bit fitter first, otherwise I'll only stick with you for 100yds!
Watch this space..............[8D]
Oh, and by the way, the bike I've bought is a Targa - a Viking Targa QX to be precise. I don't know if this is a good bike or not, but I bought it cheap!

I've got a Marin somewhere at the back of the garage, if there are going to be other duffers along I'll join in at least once.

B*ggered my back at the gym on Sunday morning so have been walking around like a granny for the last few days. If it sorts itself out over the next day or so I will be happy to join in a bit of mud and lycra.

If not it will have to be after I come back from me holidays.

PS This is also why I wasn't in Ireland on Sunday.

I'll be at the Church Rd, Sandy Lane crosroads car park at 9:30 if anyone wants to join me.

Anybody fancy a different venue?
If anyone is prepared to drive over to Flitwick I shall be going for a 2 hour pedal through woods, bridle paths, around Millbrook, over to Maulden woods and back to Flitwick. I can guarantee hills, technical bits and a fast pace.
See you at Flitwick leisure centre at 8am Sunday? [8|]

Can't be anywhere I am afraid guys as the back is still knackered - can't even get in the P-car at the moment.

Will pick up again once back from holiday.

I was down Farringdon way last week and looking lovingly at the Ridgeway. If we can persuade a few wives to act as support the ridgeway from Streatley to the stones at Avebury is a nice 'do-able' day ride in the autumn with a pub lunch. Any takers?

Like this suggestion - a lot...let's spin it into action.

However, as this is a MTB forum ([;)][;)]) then I need some help prior to the ride. Saturday evening, I was working frantically putting on new chain, brake cables, gear selector cables etc, ready for the "off" on Sunday AM....

All going well, (but getting late, I admit) until I got to the gripshift. It's a 7speed SRAM. I removed the old cable, and replaced with new (all straightforward) except now, it index's very poorly. In fact, I cannot get it past 5th gear. It refuses to shift further..just tightens up. Rear mech is perfectly free.

What is REALLY crazy, is that this happened a few months back, and the only cure was to replace the entire grip shift. [][]

Any clues ???

Graham - I'm keen (as ever).
Logistically, would we need to drive to Ivinghoe Beacon and then get picked up later in the day at Overton Hill. So maybe if we hired a van and driver?

Do you know how far the ride is?

Haven't done the Ridgeway for a few years but used to do it two or three times a year.

The bit from Ivinghoe to High Wycombe is not good (or always legal) riding as a lot of it is footpath from memory. The bit from Wycombe to Wallingford is OK but from there to Streatley is mainly on the road.

The best bit, and therefore my preferred choice, is from Streatley to Avebury as this is just about all off road and is a good combination of surfaces, hills (up and down) and views across Oxon.

Off the top of my head the ride is approx. 50 miles - however the aforementioned bumpy bits make it a good ride but 'do able' for all abilities.

In the past we have worked logistics as follows:

Drive to Streatley and abandon cars in Black Swan car park.
Cycle along Ridgeway coming down off the hill about half way for nice pub lunch
Meet 'support drivers' - wives usually at Avebury
Load up bikes and drive home via Streatley to collect abandoned car(s)

If the support team are very keen they can drop us at streatley, go shopping, meet us for lunch, go shopping etc. - this saves the trip to Streatley on the way back.

Sounds like we need a date in the diary towards the end of September - anybody want to make a suggestion?

If you want to know about the Ridgeway see here.

What about something less ambitious as an introduction - 50 miles seems a bit much for a duffers outing and on the grounds of public decency and the fact that people are going to eat I won't wear lycra.

You'd be amazed how quickly you get fit just spending 2 hours a week looking at Brian McClellan's a**e. The desire to get infront of it is seriously motivating. [:D][:D]

Seriously, just come and join me/us on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

Cheers

Andy

PS: Anyone for this weekend?

Mike,

I'm not a spring chicken and as well as almost being the wrong side of 40 I also tip the scales the wrong side of 16 stone. I don't wear lycra because there are one or two suspects who ocassionally tag along whose gaze might not just be at my ar5e [8|].

Come along by all means and if your conversation is entertaining, you don't wear luminous green lycra shorts and white knee length socks then I might not spend the whole 2 hours trying to lose you in the woods. [:)]

Brian.

I used to cycle quite a bit but that was a while ago. My general fitness level isn't bad, I play regular sports (American football) I want to do some cycling in the off season but I would prefer to build up with a bit of practice. For the record I'm 39 in a couple of months and 16.5 stone.
