About To Purchase A 993 - tips/advice?

Hi There!

A quick hello to everyone, am about to purchase a stunning 993 C2, very excited.

I would appreciate any quick tips or some advice, what to look for, average mpg, annual costs, common problems etc.

I can't wait to get it, always wanted a 993, just need to sell my BMW M Coupe which has also been a fantastic (and rare) car.

I am not an expert (do a search and you will find all you need on this forum) but did buy a similar car 2 years ago and have had a lot of fun with it.

In brief this is my experience, but this is not necessarily typical :-

Between 20 - 30 mpg depending how I drive it - did over 30mpg to Switzerland on the autoroute (Twice)

I have spent £3,563 on it so far. Most of this in the first year (Clutch, RMS, Steering Rack etc). Unless yours has been maintained by an enthusiast you should allow a decent sum to sort it out.

Apart from Clutch/RMS I do everything myself and this is a huge advantage if you are good at spannering !!

The more common problems are - Clutch issues, Brake Judder, None "N" rated tyres being fitted, rust bubbles around window rubbers, non functioning aircon (don't be told it needs a re-gas as leaks are common and expensive to rectify), general oil leaks.

Don't be put off by this as they are great fun and reliable.

Finally - get an inspection done and haggle the price accordingly.

the car comes with the turbo brake upgrades and had a clutch/flywheel done a few Months back. The owner is also giving me 12 Months MOT and 12 Months tax.

Check when the car last had a suspension alignment, these cars are very sensitive to correct alignment, and you need to have it done at a specialist who has the correct knowledge and tool (not every Porsche specialist ticks these box's)

I've spent a lot of cash on my cabriolet hood - obviously not applicable on a coupe, but everything else has been fine - just normal maintenance items - tyres, slipping alternator belt, new brake disks and pads.

Independent inspection a good investment even if only for peace of mind. I have owned mine for three years but had a look at a few before buying - the most common problems I found were rust bubbles under the windscreen, surface rust on the inner lips of the front wheel arches, rust to the black window frames/dividers, worn tyres (£650 per set), poor air conditioning, creaking windscreens and knackered batteries (especially if car not in regular use). You will find a number of threads on this site dealing with most if not all of these issues. I budgeted to spend £2,000 per annum but the reality has been far kinder - apart from the initial wheel geometry alignment and a set of new tyres in addition to a service (costing a total of £1,500) I guess I have been spending somewhere approaching £500 per annum since. The car is garaged and doesn't do that many miles so I suppose there should not be too many maintenance costs in my case. Insurance for me is circa £500 pa and although I do not really check I guess I am getting 25-27 mpg. There is a useful little buyers guide for the 993 which I bought ( I seem to recall it was written by Peter Morgan) so that would be worth getting. Good luck! Oh yes and one last thought - check for the presence of the red master key - you need this to reprogramme new key fobs. You can survive without one but it is a lot easier if you have it.

Concerning insurance, any good ones who come back with decent quotes??? My previous insurance for the M Coupe was £460 per year, fully comp and protected (I have full NCB).

Hi, I noticed this on my front wheel arches at the weekend as I was finally cleaning the Le Mans grime from it - anyone had this and got it fixed? If so what was the damage (in ££ and to the metal [;)])

I was quoted £399 all in to have the surface corrosion on the front wheel arches repaired. This was at a porshe approved bodyshop. I am sure you could get the job done for about £250 elsewhere.
