I've been looking at the various posts on this subject. My C4S has developed the habit of showing a fault message on screen plus warning lights after having been driven a few miles, so warmed up, parked for an hour or two then driven for 15 mins or so. So far it's happened on straight fast roads ie motorway or dual carriageways, not under braking.

It clears when ignition is turned off and on again, and usually remains off for the remaining journey.

Any clues there for someone with better skills than me?

I can of course book it in for diagnosis, but if it he above gives a clear pointer I'll have a go myself.

Common causes are a brake light switch, ABS sensor, or MAF sensor. A faulty brake light switch might not always manifest itself whilst braking, nor are the brake lights working perfectly a good indicator. There are 2 sets of contacts in the switch, and either of them failing can cause the problem. An under/over-reading MAF sensor can also cause the problem, but it usually occurs during heavy acceleration.

A diagnostic check will save you a lot of grief.
