ABS Inoperative

Hi All

Noticed a recent chat about ABS erupted somewhere and posted a bit off topic. Strangely no replies!

Any, on topic now! I have ABS on my late model turbo. The light on the dash comes on and goes off as normal on the dash at start up. The system is however completely inoperative. If I jump on the anchors in any conditions I get big lock-up!

Any suggestions or ideas gratefully appreciated!

Stuart

Does ABS light lit on when you start to drive your car?
ABS problem is usually either in the sensors or toothed wheels sensors read are dirty.

Hi OS

The light comes on with the ignition, goes off as it should then stays off during driving. No indication is is not happy!

My brother has a mk3 Golf that does exactly the same and when I plug it in to the laptop it reports a faulty ABS sensor yet the light on the dash goes out once started.

Not sure how you'd go about testing the sensors but if they're cheap enough it might be worth just trying to replace one and see if it works then switching to the other wheel if not.

I had the same problem with my 968. Garage tried new ABS sensors, Relays, ABS ECUs, fuses etc - in the end it was the actual ABS pump. They're not cheap (£1k new from Porsche) fortunately there was a 968 ABS pump for sale in America on ebay - as the car it came off was from California, it looked like new. Bought it for £130 IIRC.

Got the pump fitted, and ABS worked fine again.

I'm inclined to agree with you Marv. You would think anything electronic would fire up the warning light, the pump appears to be mechanical with no way of telling the system if it's ok or not. (Cue someone to tell me I'm wrong!)

I'm sure Alasdair will have a serviceable one lying about to change over and see what happens!

More work!

Cheers

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

Does the ABS pump turn on when you pull away? you should hear a whirring sound for a few seconds after pulling away.

[Edit: I had a constant ABS light which I resolved by replacing the control unit with one off ebay, the ABS isn't brilliant on these cars and I can still lock it up on less than perfect surfaces]

FWIW, the ABS pump did turn and make that whirring sound on mine. The mechanic who sorted the problem for me is the manager of a Bosch authorised garage and he said that the valves inside the pump sometimes stop working properly.
