ABS Warning light on - any ideas

Driving home tonight the ABS warning lights come on - have looked in the manual and its really helpful - not. Just says ABS now deactivated and to take in to an OPC. Any pointers would be useful before I take it in.

My only pointer would be not to take it to the OPC. Find a Bosch centre somewhere near you and they will be able to do a diagnostic check on your system and track the problem. I'm sure the OPC will charge you a fortune to do the same thing.

Similar thread running to this already and as this is something that has already happened to me it is possibly a sensor reaching the end of its life. However, it could be that a good clean of the sensors will sort your problem.

Just realised that you have posted this twice, so see the other thread for the my reply. Whether a Bosch Centre would be able to diagnose the problem is debatable as one of the other forum members has been down the same route and the diagnostic tool did not pick up a problem with the sensor.

When I did have this problem I visited the local OPC who told me to turn off the ignition and restart and all should be well. Just goes to sure you how well-trained these guys are!

Thanks for the offer - but I'm based in Stafford in the Midlands. Interestingly it came on again this morning but has since gone off and hasn't yet come back on - suspect it could be one of sensors playing up.

Thanks Maurice - as I said wanted some pointers as to possible causes before I wasted time and money if it was something that I could check out - thought that was one of the aims of a model specific forum - help each other out/share experience etc.

As with all these things there are no guarantees but it's worth a first port of call rather than the OPC - anywhere is worth a first port of call rather than the OPC unless your bound by a warratny. There is alot of experiance of Bosch centres diagnosing ABS problems on 944's that due to the age of the cars often have intermittent ABS problems which are notoriously difficult to track down that OPC's, Porsche specialists and Auto electricians have failed to track. If nothing else it will start you off down the road of the process of elimination which will stand you in good stead when the OPC tries to tell you the engine needs pulling out and partially stripping in order to fix the 'widget-thingamy-jig'.

If you can raise all the wheels and clean the sensors this may help, If you have a test meter disconect each cable and check for open curcit, if all ok switch to the meter to AC and turn the wheel and see if each one generates a voltage! if all ok check with a Bosch agent or opc.

Will give it a go tomorrow - many thanks for the replies - its comforting to know that help is out there in addition to the OPC (not that I'd normally give them a chance after my experience with them with my previous car -Boxster S) and the specialists (nearest ones about 70 mile away).
