ABS Warning Light Problem - 1993 C2

Okay here it is ........

Washed the car Saturday, start the car up and the ABS warning light comes on, drive the car and it goes off after approx 2500 rpm.......... switch the engine off and restart and no warning light.

Left at work all day, come out and fire the car up and the warning light is back but again goes out when the car is driven as above.......

Checked the rennlist tech forum and one suggestion was look for moisture around the brake fluid cap and contacts.... none there.

Someone has suggested that dry joints in the PCB of the clock can cause the fault ?

I suppose the only choice is a visit to my local specialist, or do I need not worry as the light goes out when the car is driven ?

Thanks

Mark

IMO id say that it was probably just the dampness on the wheels ABS sensors from your washing it.
if it returns them check it out further

Is it just the warning light you get or are you getting the buzzer as well??

After washing/standing, my car always throws on the abs light for a while, this goes out after roughly 30 sec of driving.

I asked JZM about this and they gave the same answer as Elliot, the cars electrics don't like moisture that much, but only be concerned if it stays on.

If you need a decent P. car garage in Leicester, Chris @ GCR just off Saffron Lane has been maintaining and sorting any extra work for my car for me recently. Recommended by a 964RS driver (Oliver Wood), Chris knows his stuff and deals like no other garage I know. i.e. cars ready to pick up, he's going out, will post an invoice pay me when you get it?!?!?!?
If you want his details give me a mail.
Regards
Rob

Hi Rob,

Yes the details would be handy, thanks.

I don't seem to be getting any buzzer warning !, but just seems strange that this ABS warning light thing has started now.

Only had the car for 7 weeks and would have expected this to have happened before when washing ?

Thanks

Mark

mine played up like this twice in 3 1/2 years but with the buzzer sounding too !
and ot was about this time of year when the car doesnt dry quickly

I have never experienced this problem at all.Our cars don't get cossetted, generally washed once a week;Spray all over with hosepipe, spray wheels well with handpump bottle of TFR(pink liquid bought in bulk from Comma stockist),brush wheels well with discarded washing up brush, rinse off with hosepipe, wash car all over including wheels with Hoselock car wash brush(type with built in detergent dispenser) using bulkbuy wash&wax shampoo, rinse off with hosepipeand remove water with silicone blade.Leave to air dry.Maybe the TFR helps.

My abs light started about three weeks into Porsche ownership, after the first proper wash I gave it. Done the panic thing, rang around, found it was nothing serious and now live with it. Perhaps its a 964 thing?

latest lunchtime update.... started engine light goes out a 2500rpm without moving the car, back at normal idle no warning light; think I will live with it ?

Rob - thanks for the info

Sounds like it's not a 964 thing. My 944 has suffered exactly the same thing. I just ignored it to see how it developed. Having said that over the past few months we've been a one car household so the 944 has been the daily workhorse and ever since i've started driving the car more the problem hasn't occured since. I think it's the car trying to tell you to drive it more!! There are a few threads on this issue on the 944 section as it appears to be reasonably common on our cars. A few guys have taken their cars to Bosch specialists who have traced the problems to either a dodgy connection somewhere in the ABS wiring or to one or more of the ABS sensors (one at each corner). Luckily it's not a particularly expensive fix. Be warned though - even though ABS operation is not part of the MOT test if the warning light is on or comes on during the test it is an MOT failure. So either live with it and take your warning light bulbs out for MOT's, get the fault traced and fixed or drive the car more and see if it goes away!!

Well since Wednesday it has not come on again, so I will have to wait and see if it comes back when I wash the car.

It was such heavy rain the night before that I can't believe its damp related, but could be proven wrong !

have just seen this question. My warning light has decided to come on too but the brake pedal is soft. Pumping it brings it back to regular feel but as soon as I turn the engine on, it can be pushed to the floor once more. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Colin

Mine seems to only do it this time of year. Whenever it's warm I don't the problem but every winter back it comes but as you all seem to find after 5mins of driving it goes off.

Update after 4 hours.... I ran the car in the garage for around 5 minutes and the light extinguished and the pedal seemed to recover 90% of normal resistance. Seems very odd to me though. Surely this is not a 'usual' occurrence? I'm thinking of taking it to my mechanic (sounds very grand!) tomorrow and asking him to take a quick look - couldn't do any harm could it?
Last time I drove the car was 4 days ago - went for a quick sprint down the A1 and all was well. Seems odd to me that this would develop while standing still. For what it's worth, I can see no fluid leaks - the reservoir is full...
