Abu Dhabi Import

Looks like I'm relocating to Abu Dhabi. I hate the thought of selling my 993. Can anyone tell me if it's possible and worth the effort/expense to import a car from the UK? My 993 is LHD. Also, how do the aircooled Porsches perform in the high heat? Many thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

I read somewhere that cars over 10 Years old are "banned" I'm sure it was Abu Dhabi[]

"...Al Zaabi confirmed that vintage and classic cars would be exempted from these rules "˜if they fulfil the requirements of the technical check'...."

Play the air-cooled card and see what happens...

I recently moved to Oman and thought of bring my car and was quoted £2340 for the container, which would have been routed Southampton, Dubia then Muscat. So perhaps yours would be a bit less, then there is 2.5% of car value for insurance. Sorry not aware of any import cahrges for Abu Dhabi.

What I did was set a value I was preapred to sell my car for and a price that I was going to take it, unfortunately someone from Germany bought my car promptly for £5k more thn I paid for it and this was when the Euro was nearer 1.3 to the £.

Now 4 months later with the pound worth 25% less you are going to find that you will get to good a price for the car in the UK and it wont be worth doing, check for your cars value on Mobile.de, price it at 10-15% less and maybe advertise it in Pistonheads.

Compare this price to the prices of Porsches in the dealers in UAE and see if its still worth taking your car.

My cousin (works in Bahrain) tells me there is Porsche club in Dubai (where this photo was taken) - they might be of help. Both new and used Porsches are cheaper there, though, so if shipping is really expensive it might actually be cheaper to buy a car there.

I worked in Abu Dhabi for two years back in 1998. I then purchased, out there, a 964 3.6 Turbo2 which was 4 years old with 50k on the clock. I paid the equivalent of 25K British pounds from a garage in Dubai. The car was black on Black, not quite the right colour for the middle East. Most of the time travelling to Dubai across the desert the OAT was close to 50 Deg C in the middle of summer. The 911 Turbo at what i would say a comfortable cruising speed of 270 Kph never moved aboved half way. And yes i did have the Turbo off the clock and reading 301Kph on the digital and on the rev limiter quite often.
As for Air Cond, well not the best. You will need lambs wool or similar seat covers as your legs will burn on the seats. Also will need covers for the Dash board to stop them burning. The Porsche Garage back then in Dubai was better than the Abu Dhabi branch, things have probably changed now. Fuel prices are awesome, i use to use nearly gallons to do the Abu Dhabi to Dubai run, You tend not to run standard CO due to the OAT, too lean is not too good.
Hope you have a great time. First thing is get a boat, great islands and BBQ to be had.
Best of luck.
TIM

Hi, if this is still a goer and you are interested then I may be able to help. One of our companies is a relocation/removals company with particular emphasis on the investment banking market so we are used to these sorts of shipments. In fact what reminded me to respond to your post was the sight of a lovely black targa we are currently loading into a container.

If you wish to talk to me please contact me on sebrussell_smith@yahoo.co.uk

That's coincidental Steve, a little bird tells me that the King of Abu Dhabi and his 'clan' are moving to Berkshire..........or for three weeks of the year anyway. Shall I inquire if you can do a swop...your 993 for one of his many 'specialist' Porsches, it will save you the job of taking yours out there and give him something to run around the estate in when he's here!

No seriously though, great place to have to spend some time....enjoy.
