Accell or Promax chip?

Thinking of chipping the car and found accell chip on e-bay, any thoughts. I would prefer Promax but has anyone had experience with accell. Not realy looking for more power it just that the car doesn't feel that smooth under accelleration.
Another thought was to drill the holes in the air box but could not see the advantage in this.

Any thoughts?

Steve,

I'm pretty sure there have been comments about the Accell Racing chip on Rennlist but my experience has been with the ProMax chip. Andrew Sweetenham of ProMax fitted mine when it was first released back in October 2004 and I was thouroughly pleased with it. It has the effect of smoothing the engine considerably, particularly on tickover and during gear changes. I believe the early version of the chip had a raised rev limiter (at about 7,200 I believe) but this has been reduced in the later version. Perhaps if Andrew sees this post he might comment with more facts.

I reckoned the asking price (£149) was good value for a generic chip when compared to the cost of a rolling road re-map (£500+) although the live re-map is almost certain to yield more. The Accell chip seems to go for peanuts on eBay but with no recourse to the seller it's probably money down the drain. I have seen reports that the Accell chip doesn't work with Tiptronic cars although I realise that won't affect you.

Definitely a vote for the ProMax chip from me.

Regards

Dave

I would only add a chip if someone programmed it on the car on a rolling road. If I had to choose I would then find a chip developed for UK spec cars using UK petrol. I don't know either chip in depth to answer that. Also, a chip by itself won't give a heap of extra power, perhaps 20bhp?

back in the early days i bought an accell chip, with cat bypass, cup pipe and air box changed to cone filter, my made 289.9 bhp and idled nicely. sold it 2 years later for more than i bought it for. i was initially dubios but seller is a nice guy who ishappy to help. i had no probs whatsoever. i only sold it because i upgraded it to motec.

Promax have done quite a bit of very good tuning work and maintenance on my 944 turbos and serviced our 964 and they are a nice bunch very freindly and enthusiastic,if you were to buy any off the shelf chip i am sure it would be good as would be their after sales,my vote would be with them aswell.

Thanks for your comments on the subject, I am thinking of getting a cup pipe as well, what would this have on the insurance?

Ok, where's the objective evidence. I know we all have our perceptions etc, but hard evidence is sorely lacking everytime I read this kind of thread,

I had a Promax chip on my 964, fitted by Camtune. They were very sceptical but both the service managers/directors commented independently that the car felt a lot more responsive with the chip fitted. It needed 98 RON petrol and it popped and banged a bit more but it definitely was more accelerative than your average 964. For £150 you ain't got a lot to lose and if it only gives you 20bhp thats close to 10% more.

I'm going to stop with two coments from your quote Richard, "Felt, and If".......I don't wish to berate, nor negate any of you, but as Dave will confim, despite many, yes many attempts including Promax giving away chips on Rennlist, I have not seen one dyno print out of the system in comparison to the original mapping. & here endeth cheap power upgrade lesson

Hard nosed engineering type, who looks for the detail and finds the devil.

Thanks Kevin,

I am not so much interested in the extra power but the sound that a cup pipe gives and the chip is to give the accelleration less of a notchy feel.

But what would these do to my insurance, would you let them know?

I let my insurance know about all the changes I have made, thus far:-

GT3 wheels
Strut brace
Cup pipe
Bilsteins
H&R springs
3rd brakelight
RS steering wheel
odds and sods.

Made no difference to the premium. Norton Heritage through PCGB insurance.

You will also be aware that bumble bees cannot fly then, or that speaker cable or interconnect has no effect on sound quality. [8|]

You can be as hard nosed an engineer as you wish but that will not change the fact that everyone who drove the car was surprised by how different (for the better) it felt. Measuring it would merely have proved that it was better but that would have cost a lot more than the chip itself. What was quantifiable was the improved economy (and I have the records for that) and the noise increase..

Your money, spend it how you will, me I'll spend it on a RR remap, at least I know what I'll be getting without any side issues.

Promax didn't explain how/why they raised the rev limit last time out, and is that a good thing? ...you tell me, now with a "slip up" like that how many more would you say go un-noticed, so if you're happy good on you, I am merely offering advice that I have seen NO evidence or comparative data to sugget the chip is doing anything more than tweaking the timing edge.

Oh and thanks for the smiley, I am also a HiFi buff with my NAIM, Audiolab, PMC, Chord, Infocus setups, subjectivity being the key......dyno's are objective. you like it that way, fine.

Kevin.
