Access to CAN data for VBox, DL1, etc.

My 2004 986 has an ODB2 connector in the dash near the glove box but I'm told that it can't deliver data fast enough for logging purposes for lap analysis with a Racelogic VBox Lite or Race Technology DL1. Apparently its possible to get CAN data from somewhere in the loom. Does anyone know how to do this?

You can tap in to the Data CAN bus:

At the DME, Plug D:
Pin 36 = CAN high - Blue/White wire.
Pin 37 = CAN low - Grey/White wire.

At the Instrument Cluster, Plug A (green):
Pin 15 = CAN high - Blue/White wire.
Pin 31 = CAN low - Grey/White wire.

Thanks Richard. I have now ordered a VBox Lite and "unterminated" CAN data cable so will shortly be having a dig around to see if I can tap into the DME as that sounds far more accessible than the instrument cluster!

The DME is on the bulkhead in the rear boot behind the carpet. The only complicating factor is the plugs/cables are a little short. The easiest way to to remove the plugs is to unbolt the DME from the bulkhead. However all UK spec cars have the DME bolted to the bulkhead with Thatcham approved nuts which only a dealer has the socket for.

You still can get the plugs off without removing the DME but your knuckles may suffer [:)]

It's easy enough to get the security nuts off with a decent pair of pliers, or tap them loose with a pin punch and hammer. The nuts hold a bracket which needs to be removed before you can remove the plugs.

The instrument cluster comes off fairly easily, and you only have to tap into the wires at the plug - not inside the cluster. You can peel back the loom tape a couple of inches and splice in to the wires.

My personal choice would also be to tap the instrument cluster wires. It's easy enough to remove the cluster as Richard says.

I take it this is the box we're talking about (not my car):
