Adjusting Wheel Bearing

Hi All,

I know this has been discussed before, I found the following youtube video linked to in another post and was surprised at how the wheel bearing was adjusted. By rotating the locknut with a screwdriver and spinning the hub at the same time until it is tight (but hub still rotating).

I've always done it by tightening and then backing off the locknut until the washer can be moved using a screwdriver (clarkes and haynes method).

Anyone care to say whether method in video is right or wrong?

There must be an official method (torqued up how much?), but we were taught (by my old man, GWR trained at Swindon!) to tighten it until it just binds then back it off one flat and check it runs freely. Worked OK on countless Fords and BMC bangers when my tool kit consisted of three spanners, 1/2", 9/16" and 3/4". Oh, and a hammer.....
 
I think what he's trying to achieve is to avoid having to nip it back up a bit after 100 miles or so by slightly overtightening it in the first place. I like his screwdriver technique, not too tight not too slack but i'd have backed it off 1/4" before nipping the allen bolt.
