My drivers window motor has finally given up the ghost (it's been threatening to for a while [:(] ) Any helpful tips/advice would be appreciated before I start removing the door panel's ?

I find it useful to have a couple of slim pieces of wood to put inside the door to hold the glass in place, makes getting the mechanism out easier if the glass is held out of the way.

Whilst you're in there, grease the lock and handle mechanism and consider changing the plastic central locking linkage. Sod's law is that it'll break the day after you put the door card back on. I'd clear any crud from inside the bottom of the door, rust treat it and make sure the drain holes are clear as well.

Just tape over the top of the door from inside of the glass to the outside. Easiest way of holding it up out of the way.

my advice is to take the motor off first (star socket) then test it off the regulator.

I find that the motors dont go and people assume they have.

I would think that the main cog on the reguator has corroded. Easily rectified if you remove the 10mm bolts secure the window and squeeze the regulator out of the lower hole in the door.

Soak it thoroughly in WD40 and then petrol. Remove the gearing unit (2 10mm and a screw). Try rotating the cog on this unit. If stiff this is a cause. With grips keep rotating this until free and then grease the inner and wd40 the cog.

now look at the mechanism. If you put pressure on it it will open and if good will close straight away. If not spring is weak and you will need a new one.

Good luck

Good advice, thks Elliot. I will give that a go before putting my hand in my pocket [:D]
