Interesting conversation today as I booked the car in for a service (and bl**dy rear wheel bearing)

Mentioned the overheating issue at Silverstone and the subsequent problems which may be waterpump capacity or stuck thermostat related and was told to ditch the thermostat on track days.

As the thermostat is only an aid to initial heating, could it be permanently ditched? What do we think?

Makes sense I suppose. Without the Thermostat, there is more room for water to flow!

Removing the thermostat from older 6 cylinder BM's is a well known cheat to delay / prevent overheating.

Wouldn't fancy leaving it out too long though, as the wear from cold will increase alot.

Seems odd.

Ditching the thermostat will mean that water is always circulated through the radiator. I know when mine was sticking open the car could take ages before it was fully warmed up (over 30 miles) , and the heater in winter was woefully inadequate.

I would have thought that if you did that you would be permanantly running on cold start settings

Seems strange for a car that's designed from the outset to be driven flat out along the autobahns for extended periods ....... part of the reason for 'over-engineering' [8|] [8|]

I'd agree with the others - poor advice in the extreme, bordering on the ridiculous. Did any other 944Ts overheat that night? I don't believe so. Were any others running no thermostat? I seriously doubt it.

I'm surprised to hear such tosh from someone as respected as JZM to be frank. They have gone down in my estimations.
