Advice in the cold

I have a 2001 3.2 Boxster s, just wondering if anybody here have any issues with the ice around the windows at this time of year, making the window not drop and therefore not being able to have entry into your cars ?? thanks

Yes. Very common occurrence and something I've had happen to me numerous times both with my previous Boxster and my current Cayman. Although its never been so severe as to stop me being able to get in.

If the problem is just the glass not dropping, a gentle pull on the door handle will normally allow the glass to "flex" enough to clear the hood and allow you to open the door. Just be careful that the glass hasn't actually frozen to the seals as you risk tearing/damaging them.

Once the door is open, you can try winding the window up and down a couple of times or using a thin, blunt instrument (like a plastic spatula or wooden lolly stick that won't scratch the glass), to slip between the outside seal where the glass slides down into the door and the glass itself to break the icy bond ! Again, be careful not to damage the seal.

Don't be remote to use hot water. The thermal shock can cause the glass to shatter.

I suffered with this problem a few times last year. As Gary says you can carefully pull the door open and the glass flexes sufficiently but I couldn't warm-up the glass enough for it to drop which meant the door couldn't be closed ! The OPC had no real solution other trying to sell some coating for the glass which would discourage water staying on the glass.

think my solution is to have my drivers door window open just a tad so that it does not go up into the roof whilst the door is closed, then i will not have this problem :)

Gummi pflege around the door seals helps. I use this on all my cars to avoid sticking seals at this time of year, try it[:)]

Try coating and polishing the rubber seals with Gumi fledge (is that spelt correctly?) or "Son of a gun" - they need a good clean with white spirit first, then apply and let dry - then a good polish up.
The frozen window is usually to the rubber door seal rather than the rubber seal that runs along the top of the door across the window.

You could also invest in a car cover - a short one that just covers the roof and windows - so easy to fit and remove quickly - indeed its quicker than having to scrape the windows.
