As you all know, got my used 997CS a couple of weeks ago and love it. BUT recently, I have noticed a funny smell after a long drive which smells like a rubbery smell. Friend of mine thinks its clutch wear and funny enough as the car was last serviced at 33000 miles at East London Porsche who I know well, they sent me a copy of the Invoice showing details of the 40000 mile service carried out in August 2008. It states and I qoute, ''CLUTCH FEELS HEAVY, POSS REQUIRES NEW CLUTCH ASSEMBLY DUE TO WEAR''. Shouldn't this have been seen on the 111 point check prior to buying the car? Plus also says '' FRONT PADS APPROX 70% WORN, WILL NOT LAST TILL NEXT SERVICE''. Don't want to be a moaner to Colchester Porsche as I should not really have this info from East London. What do you guys think?

Hi Harry. All the 996's AND 997's have this 'smell' from the back after being driven in any sort of anger - there are quite a few posts about it on this and other Porsche forums.
I'm currently in a 996 C2 that I've owned for over four years and I noticed the smell as soon as I took delivery of it. I feared the worst and thought that my clutch was on the way out and that I'd bought a lemon. That was in 2005 and 15,000 miles ago and all is still well with my clutch. I recently put it to the test by finding a hill to drive up (slowly) and then giving it the beans in first or second gear to see if it would slip. It just pulled like train, so no worries there.
I know that the smell can be a bit off-putting but it just seems to be a characteristic of the 996/997 range. ) Either that or the clutches that they put in them are an inch thick!![]
It seems to me that the engine is all crammed into quite a tight space on these 911's and nothing has that much room to 'breathe' if you know what I mean. I've noticed that I can put my hand over the rear spoiler up to 3 hours after a drive and there'll still be some heat coming out of the engine compartment!!! (Yes, my engine compartment cooling fan is working!)
Hope this helps.
Adrian.

Why no try the direct aporoach and as Colchrster for a copy f the last service report. If you get it you can then ask the necessary questions! If you don't get it you can expresss your disappointment at their lack of co-operation and leave muttering about trying to get a copy somehow - then use the press reporter's standard "I will not reveal my sources" when you ask them for evidence that the issues had been addressed before they retailed the car to you.
Another approach would be to try to speak with the previous owner - as identified from the V5 (or whatever it is called now).
Also my 997tt has an odd smell from the rear after a run - very noticeable becasue I reverse into mt garage - but I know that it isn't my clutch as the has tiptronic transmission!
Regards
Richard

Hi guys. To answer the question don't worry a out the smell it's normal and nothing to worry about. The clutch being heavy is. When I picked up my 997 c2 it had a similar issue. The chap that I bought from actually said the clutch needed replaced and that as part of the sale he would do this.
I would just go to the dealer And tell them that u r not happy about the findings. If u don't want to drop the opc in the mud then say you read all the socumentation and saw the clutch needed replaced. Whatever u need to do to get the work done. Brakes included in that. I wouldn't be happy knowing the clutch was getting heavy. It's a sign that money will need to be spent soon.

Thanks Guys. The car now has 46000 miles and I was thinking that if it has not had a clutch replaced yet, it could have been that. I will call Colchester and tell them and see what they say. I am sure they will put right if anything wrong anyway as the Salesmanager there used to be at East London so there is some history there.
Here is a link to my old 111 point inspection and warranty booklet
https://www.porscheclubgb.com/legacy/clientftp/Register/996/faq_porsche_warranty.pdf
There is no specific clutch inspection (ie gearbox out), but they do test the clutch during the test drive.

It would appear Porsche East London, were up to just saving some money, as the heavy pedal was the indication that the clutch was worn, tired and needed replacement. You have a good case for East London to foot the bill.

I am interested in knowing more about this much discussed 111 Point Check. Is there a document anywhere which actually lists what these 111 points are and what standards on each need to be met in order to pass? I can't seem to find one anywhere.
Came across this article on the 996 register. I think this listing is still valid. Note of course, that there are no standards!
