guys, i wrote off my c4s on Tuesday and have to replace it, it was a 06 midnight blue car with a relatively meagre spec.
<Thankfully I have unlimited gap insurance to sweeten the pill. >
I am in need of an immediate replacement car and was initially tempted simply to repalce it witha new car, however I am now thinking that perhaps waiting for a factory order facelifted car is the way ahead and to purchase a 2 'ish' year old c4s or c2s with as much spec as I can find and run it till the new car arrives.

I have seen a 06 <jan> c4s advertised with 7000 miles and a broad range of options,£56k would secure the car.

What are your views on my depreciation minimising plan? Or do any of you have a better idea?

sounds like a cunning plan[:D]
having read thru all the depreciation threads recently posted here it would seem a very wise move

I would......

Order the facelift and whilst waiting agree a six / nine month lease with the OPC for a car on the forecourt.

This maintains your cash, means no messing about agreeing prices and trade ins and the interest on the cash will pay a good bit towards it....

Good luck......hope all was OK with the right off!!

I'm sorry you'll be paying £2,000 per month to lease a Porsche for 9 months. Think about it you've got to fund the depreciation for the finance co and make them a margin on top.

Everybody is worried about depreciation, which is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more people worry, the more they sell, just driving down the prices. Someone, was it this forum ?, got offered a mere £42k trade-in on an 06 plate 997 if I recall, and that was against a new(er) Porsche. Believe me, the dealers can't give them away right now and are certainly not buying for stock.

For heaven's sake the only way to beat depreciation, or at least not feel ripped-off, is to buy cheap.

If you have a lump of cash in your pocket, I would advise contacting every 997 for sale that you fancy, and making a low bid for it. Trade one seller against another, don't be too focused on one particular car. You will get one cheap, there are more for sale than there are people buying. Dealers will be awash with trade-ins this month, and the auctions will be busy, and private punters will be desperately trying to offload there car for more that the trade bid.

good point robert, but surely the best way to beat depreciation is not to sell at all, then there will be such little supply that demand will then start to outstrip supply, forcing prices up(in theory anyway!)
that relies on people not wanting to trade up all the time, and historically, porsche drivers tend to do that every18 months or so!!
-this one included[:D]

Cheers for that robert, I have seen this car I am considering buying for cash:

2006 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 4s COUPE, MANUAL,7000 MILES,55REG,BLACK BLACK,BLACK LEATHER SPORTS SEATS,
GUARDS RED SEAT BELTS,UNMARKED 19" CARRERA CLASSIC ALLOYS, FULL CHRONO PACK PLUS WITH SPORTS EXHAUST. NAVIGATION MODULE FOR PCM AND PHONE. BOSE SOUND SYSTEM. RAC TRACKBACK. EXTENDED WARRANTY AND PORSCHE BREAKDOWN UNTIL 2009. AS NEW INSIDE AND OUT.
the seller is looking for £56995. This seems fairly reasonable considering the spec and the age/mileage, I have checked its history with the supplying opc and it all checks out, plan to have the car independently inspected , it is in the Manchester area, I live in Glasgow , does anyone recommend a good independent inspector who could give it a good look on my behalf? Would the opc inspection be a better option?

Ninmeister in Warrington seems the most likely option for inspection.

As Robert says buy cheap - the car you are considering looks cheap but be prepared for a £43k part ex price in 9 months time (facelift cars with DFI will be out, so less appealing part ex); which makes you wonder whether its better to buy a 05/55 BoxsterS or CaymanS - you're not going to lose that sort of money on either of those cars and private buys would set you back 27-30/30-35k respectively. Factor in the interest on £20k of your money and buying a 997 for 9 months use doesn't look that financially atttractive.

All depends how much you are prepared to pay for the pleasure of a 997 ongoing.

I recently went the same route as Black80XSA suggests. I picked up a very clean 05 Boxster, this month for 23.5K until my facelift 997 order arrives in late summer. There's a lot of them around at the moment, plus this guy was desperate to shift it (new baby imminent). I forgot how much fun these things are, especially with the un seasonal weather [:)]. So maybe think about a bit of roof down summer fun, with less of a kicking at trade in time.

update on story so far, attempted to have the car inspected, guy selling stopped communicating, further investigation on the plate revealed the vehicle was known to specialist non francjised dealer in the area and the car had a very chequered past. decided to pass on it.
subsequently I have found and bought a 2 year old c4s in slate grey with a full spec,< i will post this later>. So many thanks to all the people who have helped me and also for the offer of sale above.
