Advice on Battery charger. Help

Hi,
Have just received a Ctek XS 800 from SC Parts Group Lt which should keep my 993 ready for immediate use should the roads dry up.Anyway I unusually read the instructions which say that -batteries mounted in vehicle red to positive and black to the chassis!!!!! Had I not read this I would have connected red to positive and black to negative. Then made another mistake rang the Co concerned to seek advice and they directed me to my local garage.
Helpful is not the first word which springs to mind, my dog Hollie (big old english ) would have been more helpful and a lot more sincere.
So please can someone give me re assurance on what I have bought and can I attach leads plus to red, black to negative while battery still hooked up without damaging anything?????
All advice gratefully received

No problem with connecting the clips to the battery terminals. Leave the battery connected to the terminals or you will lose memory setting on DME and radio (code will have to be re-input). In the event of the battery being disconnected the DME will remap itself with about ten minutes of driving (Not just running the engine) so not a major problem.

Cheers,

A bit confusing this ,am I correct on this have just bought the Ctek XS 3600 and the battery is connected in the car (Boxster) I connected the red terminal + and the black - using the adapter and then connected the charger to the mains switched it on and set the mode to the one showing a car and the battery at half level after a short time it changed to the full battery indicator ,which I assume means the battery is fully charged and from now on it will top up as required and only when I go to start the car up do I disconnect it at the mains and disconnect it ant the teminal block .I though I read that even if you changed the polarity it would not blow the charging unit.

.....the DME will remap itself with about ten minutes of driving (Not just running the engine) so not a major problem.
Fred, in the drivers manual of 993 it is said it is sufficient just to iddle the engine for 10 min. You say one actually has to drive the car... Is it just your experience?

Thank you
Andrew

Thank you to those who responded so swiftly.
So tomorrow I shall go to my 993 the battery being in vehicle and connected.
Shall hook up to my Ctek XS 800 battery charger and place red wire clip to positive battery terminal, black wire clip to negative battery terminal and then switch on at mains.
My confusion was caused by instructions saying "connect the black cable/wire to the vehicles chassis."
Finally is it necessary to keep to keep charger on all the time or would a few hours do every day or so???

Leave it on all the time it will condition the battery so you will have max power all the time ,if you switch it off it will loose power as it will drain down, that is the idea of the unit wired up in the first place

All sounds correct to me , just ensure you disconnect from the mains before you disconnect from the battery , or just use the fag lighter socket (not sure if bogster has one , or if it will work , fine on my 993 )

Andrew,
I always take mine for a 'spirited' drive as I was told that the DME needs variety in order to set itself up. So really it is up to you, if you want an excuse to a half hour spin around the local roads then take it for a drive. Whatever you do dont let the neighbours see you sitting behind the wheel pretending to be Stirling Moss whilst the engine ticks over![:)]

Enjoy the car, looks rather good in that colour (Arena Red ?)

Cheers,

Fred, I took your advice.. Do not know if it helped DME, but I enjoyed the ride [:)]
And yes, this is the Arena Red!

I'm sure I read in the owners manual that you should disconnect the battery from the car leads before charging. Is this not absolutely necessary then (I have a Halfords Fully Automatic charger/conditioner)? I have to say it's a pain disconnecting it every time a charge is needed (frequently at the moment with my short runs to work - me thinks I could do with a new battery anyway). The alarm also sounds for about 2 mins when the battery is disconnected as well so can't do it early morning!

Stewart,
You are correct about disconnecting the battery when charging. (The factory are probably thinking about a charger with a high amperage). But for a trickle charge or using a conditioner then I still say leave it connected. Mine are connected to conditioners sometimes for months (in the case of the bike) and no harm has ever been done.

Cheers,
