Advice on buying...

New member
Help! I'm a newbie to the club / forum and currently trying to realise my childhood dream by buying a 944 Turbo. I have had a look at the buying guides mentioned in previous threads but was wondering, from personal experience, is there anything specific I should ask about / look for / test whilst driving? Any help would be greatly received as I don't want to appear a complete muppet when looking at prospective cars (no matter how true it may be!)

Thanks in advance[:D]

Well your not getting it its not for sale..[;)] Saying that for the right price anything is. [:D]

You need to look at as many as you can, unlike me who bought one that i never even saw let alone driven!!!

Obviously the usual lots of service history and recipts, but that wont guarentee a cars has been really loved. Thee is a big difference between a full service history and an enthusiast making sure everything is in top condition.

Best advice would be to take a good Porsche mechanic to have a look at he car. But if the bodywork and interior are in good nick, then most mechanical things can be fixed (at a price!!)

1 other thing, if you want a nice 944 but arnt fussed about the turbo then get a really nice S2. Have a look at some of the independant dealers they often have some good buys.

Like slim-boy, mines not for sale either (ever!)

It took me a VERY long time to find the car I wanted as it seems the Turbo's are quite hard to come by, especially for the latest ones.
When a car did come up - it was snapped up within a day or so, I was gutted on many occasions. [:(]

I was also constrained by my wife (bless her), would not let me have a white one and I chose not to have a red one as I believe red sports cars are just like the red flag to a bull when it comes to the rozzers!
Like all cars - get a look at as many reciepts as pos. Don't let them scare you off though!

So the one I have now - I am really chuffed with, even with its multitude of 'little' problems.

I have been keeping an eye out still of what is available but I don't know if its just me but it appears that the prices are going up on the Turbo models.

I hope you find one soon Mark.

ps Have you looked at insurance at all yet? - I have just moved mine to Directline.com and saved just over £200, AND it gets cheaper if you put your loved one on it too.

Funny thats what my wife said about the white one.. lolssss

Theres no doubt that a really good turbo is going to be more and more difficult to find, hence why am am willing to spend money on this one to keep it in top condition. Its not there yet but maybe this time next year.

As for the value, your not kidding, after speaking to various OPCs and independants, people are shocked at the price they have fallen to, i think this is a good time to buy one, as the next few years will see a rise in value for good turbo models, as we all know on here the 944turbo is the best porsche. [;)] Its a joke that a Carrera 2 now is about £20k and it was £10k cheaper to buy than my car when new!!!

No doubt, 3 years my 944 will be worth £18-£20k....

Mmm - I was looking at the 911 Turbo origionally and thought they were highly priced and changed my mind to the 944T. A good 944T artical in P911&Porsche mag made my mind up.

I am going to be selling my 944 T in a couple of months time, don't know if you could wait that long? Or if you would be interested in a high miler - 130K. I know how difficult it is to find one, it took me 5 months and a lot of miles, but i eventually found my current T, owned by a fanatic. He only sold it because he just wasn't doing enough miles in it. I have history virtually from new, a folder about 3 inches thick of history, bills for about 15K in the last 7 years.
It's 1986, D reg panther black, full black leather, 17" turbo wheels, S4 brake conversion. He had it looked after by Sevenoaks, i have been using RGA in vauxhall, Bob at RGA would be able to tell you anything about the car. It's generally in v good condition, and has been loved.
I'm in london, let me know if you would be interested in coming for a spin some time.
As I said I won't be selling for a couple of months, you might be lucky and find a good one straight away, but it could well take you that long. But let me know if you're interested and we can meet up nearer the time.
otherwise - happy hunting

Thanks for all the help guys, I had pretty much resigned myself to having to wait for the right one to come along!

I took a silver one out that Autobahn have in at the moment but it didn't scream "buy me". I was also a bit worried that its been for sale for about a month now (thers that I have seen advertised have been sold before the ink has dried). It also seemed a bit hesitant when on the road (OK, didn't give it too many beans, but it didn't feel quite right somehow) Add to that, my better half has stated no white or red ones, narrows the field a bit! I have this thing about black sports cars so I'm holding out if poss (must be my age and watching too many episodes of Knight Rider) LOL.

Still, I've got a request in with Shirleys Garage to see what they can come up with. Until then, I will have to contend myself with club events and dreaming....

There does seem to be a shortage of good Turbos around at the moment, which is good for the sellers but not for buyers. I've been helping a friend of a friend look for one and we're having a hell of a job. He keeps offering me £2k more than I paid for mine two years ago [:D][:D]

Should I take it? [:-]

When I was looking for mine I rejected many because they didnt seem quite right and were hesitant. I now think they were ok and it was just the dreaded Turbo lag that I was not used to comparing to a N/A car. Try and test a car that already has a boost enhancer (BE) or Reliaboost fitted. These cost less than £99 and transform older Turbos as most wastegates are really tired and open too early.

Maybe a wierd suggestion but what about buying a BE in advance and asking Autobahn if you could fit it for a test drive (takes 10 mins) - they really do make that much of a difference.

Take a look in the classified section at www.pistonheads.com There is a Baltic Blue Turbo for sale there that was owned by a friend of mine a few years ago. It's been for sale for a few months (my friend of a friend rejected it), and is currently owned by the bloke I bought my Turbo from.

It's a close knit world this 944 Turbo lark []
