Advice on Oil

Hi

I need a service & an oil change next month & want some advice on what to use. I use my 968 as a daily driver all year round no matter what the weather & it's kept on the driveway.

Indi who i bought the car off said Mobil 1 10w40 semi synth is what he uses for 968's & older Porsche's

OPC says they would use Mobil 1 0w40 fully synth

Opie says 5w40 fully synth

What oil are you running & why?

Regards

Karl

I bought my 968 from Hartech who owned it and had also serviced it for many years for the previous owner. They had always used 20w50. The indie I used in Edinburgh uses 10w40 and put this in. I noticed numerous small & minor oil leaks after this change. I'll be returning to 20w50 for the next change and I bet I'll see a big difference.

I`m using Mobil Super 2000 10w-40 Semi-Synthetic in my 1994 968 Sport as it was recommended to me by Motortune in Shotts.
I`ve done about 10,000 miles in the four years which I have owned the car and used 5 litres topping up. Total mileage on the car is just over 103,000.
My car is a good weather toy and lives in the garage.

Karl a 5w multigrade oil like the spec they quote is the correct oil for the car but I would go to a 10w multigrade if the miles are high.

I use 10w-60 Millers CFS in my race car as do a lot of other guys (both S2s and 968s) but I wouldn't necessarily say it is the best for a road car.

I used the 10-60 Castrol Edge in my track car, as Neil has said, a lot of track / race cars tend to use this grade.
I found that over the course of a days track driving the oil pressure would drop a little as the oil got hotter...[Which is also why I had considered fitting a second oil cooler]...[;)]
Although I would think the 10-40 is fine for road use...
Don't be tempted to go any thinner than this, as its an "old" style engine and I found they used to get a little noisy occasionally on thinner stuff...[:D]

Thanks for all your reply's.

Looks like it's 10w40 which is what's in the car at present. she has just covered 100k

The only decision now is either Mobil Super 2000 X1 10W/40 Oil or Castrol Magnatec 10W40 A3 B4 Oil

Hi Karl
I've owned my 968 for over ten years and it was using Castrol Magnatec 10:40 semi synthetic when I bought it, and I've kept to it. Do not use fully synthetic because if there is the slightest possibility of a leak the fully synthetic will find it. I've asked my PC (Cambridge) the very same question and that was the answer they gave me.

One word of advice, check the oil level regularly and never it let it drop below a mm or so of the full mark on the dipstick, I've done this and it's paid off.
