We are looking to book a short break in early April to Pickering with our dog.

just wondering if anyone could recommend any decent drives/ places to visit in the moors or surrounding areas as not been to this part of the country before ?

Considering a stay at White Swan in Pickering, any thoughts on this or alternatives (would need to be dog friendly) ?
Car parking there looks OK.

Thanks

Neil

You on the edge of some amazing roads.

I would recommend going from Pickering to Helmsley, and then on the Stokesley TT, (you could stop in Stokesley at Uno Momento for a great breakfast or just a coffee stop) at the end turn right at the roundabout and follow under Roseberry Topping, get out and walk up it if you want, then keep on, turn right onto A171 for a few miles, once you go up the steep hill with hairpin look out for the road it Castleton on the right and follow Blakey Ridge all the way over, stopping at the Lion Inn for food/rest stop.

Follow Blakey Ridge all the way down and through Hutton Le Hole, at the T junction, turn left back to Pickering.

Also go up out of Pickering to Whitby, come back via Blakey Ridge if you haven't done it.

Hi

If you Google the NY500 cafe near Pickering they offer a range of tour routes (for free) in that area apparently.Looks a nice place.

Cheers

Hi Neil
We live only 40mins from Pickering. and are always up on the moors. As well as been suggested.
North York moor railway
dalby forest
daffodil walk, farndale
robins hood bay
loads of great places to eat that are dog friendly
enjoy you stay

Hi Dick.

If you are taking Muttley with you then don't let him disturb the sheep wandering around on the magnificent moors over Blakey Ridge. You could perhaps let him off the leash if you visit Runswick Bay - or maybe just sit outside at the little cafe take it all in and don't ever tell anyone that you went there. [:)]

There are lots of driving options around the Pickering area. What you choose to do will depend upon your preferences.
For the best roads the area has to offer regarding light traffic, reasonable surface, passing places and driver enjoyment with flatter scenery I would suggest heading south east using Sledmere as a pin point and work a radius of 20 miles around there.
The next best option with lots of heather and moors, triangulate Pickerin, Whitby, Scarborough.
For decent roads while going somewhere avoid the A64 and A19 unless you like dual carriageways.
For Long runs with smaller but enjoyable places to reach and enjoy refreshments head to places like Bedale, Masham, Middleham, Hawes, Muker, Reeth.
For shorter runs head to places like Helmsley, Rievaulx, Ampleforth, Byland Abbey, Danby, Hutton le Hole, Rosedale Abbey, Sandsend.
For larger places with shops and more choice of refreshments try Thirsk, York, Harrogate, Malton, Knarsborough, Whitby, Scarborough.

Lets hope you enjoy your time in and around Pickering enough to spread the word and revisit again and again.
