Advice please on a replacement sports switchable exhaust for my 2004 Carrera 4

Good morning,

My June 2004 Carrera 4 has just had its major service at my OPC. One of the comments was that the exhaust is nearing the end of its life (it is the original from new so getting on for 17 years old...). The chap mentioned looking at 3rd party exhausts and said they can be better value and you can also get stainless steel with a longer life. The car has the sports switchable exhaust system, has full OPC service history and is original with no mods.

I would appreciate any thoughts on whether you would stick with a Porsche sport switchable exhaust system to replace it please?

If you think changing it for a 3rd party exhaust makes sense, what compatible sports switchable exhaust do people recommend and what are the main benefits (is it mainly price or something more) would be please?

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice here please.

Hi Tim,

Welcome.

I understand that is true. The OEM PSE is weak and most Indys replace them with makes that have a lot better construction and materials of the back boxes. Because of the RWD, the PSE get hammered by stones and wont last, so replacing a PSE with a PSE, won't last. Whether there is an aftermarket switchable, I do not know. I know mine was replaced by a Miltek and the switch was subsequently removed from the dash, by the Indy, but I love the sound of it. I don't know many people who run a PSE not on the better noise :)

I'd recommend a Miltek every day of the week.

Don't know if that helps at all.

I'm running Dansk SS on mine - there was a thread where there were some "complaints" (seems a bit harsh really - more slight negatives) regarding Dansk versus Miltek but I think all in all both are good 3rd party options. I'm sure there are others too.

I had my OE (and rusty) switchable sports exhaust Carrera 4 silencers replaced 3 years ago with Dansk switchables. Fitted by Wrightune in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. The dashboard switch is still used. They are absolutely fine. Highly recommended. Sound great, no problems and I don't have to mess around with a key fob to switch between quiet and louder. And less than half the price of the OE Porsche items.

I fitted the Milltek cup exhaust for a customer and this was on the loud side of loud! Luckily it was just what the customer wanted. At the time this was their only product.

I like Dansk - lots of options too.

Don‘t rule out the PSE, the retrofit kit is actually a lot cheaper than buying the mufflers separately. Rumour is the kits have run out now only available as old
stock in the aftermarket.

I had the same decision to make on my 2004 C4S.
I ended up going for the Dansk fitted by Autofarm.
Good price (I think from memory just over 2K) and sound is not bad, but nowhere near as raw as the PSE.
If I knew then what I knew then I prob would have stumped up for the PSE.
I honestly think it is without peer - and is idolized for good reason.
I was interested to hear above that it is considered to be inferior material wise - mine lasted 80k -odd miles. Lovely bit of kit but savagely overpriced.
What did you go for?

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Top Gear exhausts. I have just fitted their sports silencers which are beautifully manufactured and sound great. Will be too loud for a lot of people, but spot on for me. They have a switchable system which I understand can be used as a direct replacement, so be worth you checking that option. They also do a mild sports set which is a good option if you’re not bothered about retaining the switchable element and are not chasing a louder exhaust note. Top gear are based in Dorset... Bridport I think.
