advice please

hi guys this is my first post i have bought a 928 v plate it has a few issues which is not a problem as i used to be a mechanic just need some details what grade oil ? how often for services anyone done a cam belt how hard ?dash electrics dont work any common faults gauge do as they like no lights etc all external lights ok runs good etc anyone know the car RNH801V CHEERS IN ADVANCE JOHN
 
found my autodata disc so got cambelt change oil grades sorted anyone need any imfo from disk let me know

Ok...couple of things...I am an ex-race mechanic so you will be fine working on a 928....Cam belt should be done every 4 years ish...

Electrics....lollllllllllllllllllll

EVERY 928 has electric problems....I dont think Germany had any schools for auto electricians :)

I seem to be replacing mine bit by bit....

When you first get a 928 with electrical problems do this...

Fuse and relay board is under a wooden panel ..under passenger side carpet..

REMOVE ALL FUSES ...AND REPLACE WITH NEW...

Then remove all relays ...clean ALL terminals and replace...

This will probably cure at least half of your electrical problems...

Any others...ask here...lol...I have probably had them as well :)

One other thing....its worth joining the PCGB as your local OPC (Official Porsche Centre) will then give you a 10% discount on ALL parts....it will easily repay itself within the first year...

Any more problems...just ask :)

I never did a cam belt before; i just changed it on my 928s - not complicated but took a long time ( reckon 4 to 10 hours depending on extent of work and problems met)
some tips I collected on the way;
1. Change the water pump at the same time (in my case my water pump was seized so I had to change it anyway)
2. Crank bolt is extremely hard to undo; you need a long 27mm 3/4 inch socket with 3/4 inch breaker bar - I know lots of people who broke a 1/2 inch bar (including me)
3. maybe worth changing all the seals at the same time, I did (2 * cam, 1 * crank, 1 * oil pump)
4. Cam gears are aluminium with a hard coating; if the coating is worn through then change them as they then wear very quickly
5. Some (not all) oil pump gears are aluminium; change to steel
6. If you want to remove the oil pump gear then do it before you remove the belt; there is nothing else to hold it still
7. The correct mark on the balancer for TDC is 0/T or 0/1 (not 0/0), pointer is on the WP.
8. It is very hard to see the the tiny mark (cut) on the "TDC" tooth on the motor side of each cam gear. I marked mine with a small Dremel grind mark on the front before I removed the belt.
9. If it is a manual then you can lock the crank by putting it in gear. Automatic? then you have to buy/borrow/steal the very expensive flywheel lock.
