ADVICE PLEASE

Pal has just bought a 3.2 G50 purely for track day use, the car is completely standard and is an original Sport but with standard rims, he wants to do a few mods but nothing too expensive to just bring a few more horses etc, what do you suggest?

Hi Des, it takes a lot of money to get any more significant power out of the 3.2 engine. If the car is purely for track use, I'd recommend taking as much weight out of the car by stripping the interior to the bare minimum. Removing weight will be the cheapest way of getting the car to accelerate faster. The stripped out parts can be sold off to fund future mods, thereby keeping costs down.

I'd concentrate funds on getting the standard braking system into good condition, as it's adequate if properly maintained, and get some good track tyres. For me, this would be a higher priority than engine mods.

My opinion and experience only.

Cheers

Totally agree about weight saving. This will improve all the car's dynamics (accelaration, braking, grip, handling etc).

A re-programmed ECU chip might not go amiss. Steve Wong has been mentioned elsewhere on this forum. Also, 15" wheels provide a cheap way to lower the car, improve the gearing and access to a wider range of cheaper tyre options. Oh, and a harness - helps to be strapped in tightly.

Hi Gary, a performance air filter and drilled air-box will make the engine sound good on throttle, but do little to nothing for performance, and a performance free-flow exhaust will reduce mid-range torque and make the car slower. This was my experience.

To get any real power increase out of a 3.2 will take upwards of £2k and has to be a complete package of mods, which I quickly stopped considering because of price.

Cheers

I have owned 5 3.2's ALL drove a little different, one exception was a car I imported from the Fatherland, bought it very cheap, no history, but boy was it quicker than the others....someone remarked that it had different cams...very lumpy on tickover...as with the 964 can you chip the 3.2.....?

Hi Des

For track-day only, there is quite a lot you can do. If you contact me off the forum, I'll let you have my Stage 1, 2 and 3 set-ups for the Carrera - the latter almost to race spec.

Money is the biggest point though - lots of it and you can do anything.

Can you forward your contact detail please so that we can get in touch with you to discuss the possible mods further or contact me at murch@nildram.co.uk

Many Thanks

Hi Amusa

Contact the Reg Sec for 3.2.........Charles Marsland..01803 527262 He will be able to give you a pretty acurate answer.

Have fun

Front bearings are about £15-20 in parts each side, took me about 1.5-2 hrs to do both, so a pro should do it quicker. So I bet you'll get stung for about £200+ if you're lucky.
