Hi guys need some advice, took the car out this morning, and heard a strange noise from the rear offside then a clunk and lost power steering and the battery light came on, the car then started to overheat. Managed to get it back home. Can anyone shed some light as to to pully system on the engine as I assume I have shed a belt or a pully from the engine and lost the alternator, steering pump and water pump. also how easy is it to see without putting the car up onto a set of ramps. Or will this need another trip to the porsche doctor[:(]

Your diagnosis is probably right...it's called the 'V-belt' and it powers all those ancillary items you mentioned from the engine. It will need to be replaced ASAP.

Sounds to me like the serpentine belt has broken. You'll need to take the access panel off behind the seats to inspect and replace it. If it is the belt it's reasonably straightforward to replace - see: [link=http://www.turbo911.com/showthread.php?t=285]http://www.turbo911.com/showthread.php?t=285[/link]. Alan.

Update frm Dr Porsche It would appear the water pump has sheared at the shaft £150 plus vat to replace. Thanks for the replys guys hopefully it will be home soon [:)] Chris

Hi T200, Can you tell us how old the car is/type etc and what sort of use it gets (regular/irregular) and what the service history is like. To my knowledge this is a rare type of failure but we need to keep track of it? Regards

Hi Bryn, It's a 2001 on a Y plate Boxter S Tiptronic 26k on the clock I only bought the car april 2008 it is my first venture on the Prosche experience and from what i can see on the provinance it is genuine milage I guess it has been used irregular by the two previous owners as I have all the Test Certificates for the car.have only put just over 2.5k on it since I bought it so. We used the car weekend and days off run about. From the service book it was last serviced in April 2007 having a yearly service and spark plugs changed. I have asked the guy doing the repair to carry out a full service on it thenI know it has been done. If you need any other info let me know. chris

Thanks Chris, Pump failures (internal/seals) are not uncommon but for the shaft to shear such that the drive belt comes off is pretty rare, hope you get it all sorted to your satisfaction. Bryn

Ive always called the belt a Polyrib - seems there are lots of words for the same thing

Glyn, You are correct the ancilliary drive belt is the "polyrib belt" in Porsche terms we should all use the same terms to avoid confusion! Ths belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air con compressor. It should be checked every service and changed every 48k miles. Not too difficult on a Boxster once you have accessed it by removing the front engine cover behind the seats.

Well Guys I have got the car back complete with a new water pump and got a full service done while it was on the operating table. The old lady sounds good now just like brand new or as near as you could get. [:D]
