Advice Wanted

Hi all
Usual stuff, I have a small 2 seater at the moment and would like to change to a slightly easier car to get along with.

Back in the 80' s I had a 911 SC Targa and enjoyed the practical, easy motoring that came with the car.
More recently I have been looking at Porsche again and thought I had found the perfect answer (993) only the Missus (who must be obeyed) said " only if it' s a convertable"

Are there any huge problems I should be looking out for before buying a rag top?
Are there any good used Porsche dealers that you would recomend? M[FONT= Times New Roman" ][FONT=verdana, geneva"]y first 911 came from a company called AutoFarm in Northchurch (Berkhamsted area) they have long been replaced by a BMW dealer.

Any help would be great

Thanks for that! I have sent them a calling card.

I' m sure I will hear from them Monday.

Not many Cab owners here then?

Thanks for that, my 2 seater is well known for leaking, thats one of the reasons it' s going!

Just out of interest how much is a rear window replacement?
What sort of money are you spending on servicing the car?
That wind deflector thing, is that a Porsche extra?
Is it (the car) your daily driver?
Oh and one last thing, how much luggage space do you have? I went to Le Mans a couple of weeks back and had just about enough space for my y fronts for 3 days.

Sorry for all the questions, I suppose I should go and see one in the flesh....

Great info thanks.

I am going to 911virgins.com in my lunch hour on Tuesday to have a nose around.

Visited 911virgin.com (their sales office not the website) fantastic choice of cars, only one Cab but a couple of glass roof Targa' s, crikey I liked them all. I will take the wife there on Saturday.
I sent out a couple of emails on Monday to a few dealers to see if there was anything that I might be interested in and got this reply from one.

Dear MikeR

Thank you for completing the ******** Porsche Wanted form, however,
sadly I
am unable to add you to our database due to budget limitations.

993 - A RHD Cabriolet that will meet our renowned standards is likely
to be
around the £34k+ bracket because at under this the
mileage/condition/maintenance and depreciation will be too high for
our
client base.

Sorry we could not be of much help but if you wish to increase your
budget
and/or finance a portion for the 993 range, then please let me know.

Kind regards

I was quite surprised to say the least, and I thought I could make it in the Porsche World[:)]

Anyway, I' ll take my £30,000 and look else where.
as usual, I' ll keep you informed.

all the best
Mike

mike try autobahn have two 993 cabs in stock 1at 29k and 32k
porticraft some times has the odd one in good luck with your search

regards db

Mike, I' ve had my 993 CAB for 4 months now, prior to that I had a Boxster. The 993 is a fabulous car and exceeds all my expectations it' s awsome!

However, do be aware the roof mechanism can cause an expensive tear in the roof fabric if it' s not checked, as happened to me and cost me almost 3k for a new roof.

What to look for; when the roof is half folded back you will see to sharp pointed ' lugs' above the windows on the driver and passenger door. As the roof fabric folds at this point there is a piece of ' knicker' elastic that is supposed to pull the fabric away from these lugs, however over time the elastic stretches and doesn' t perform this task. The result is the fabric folds and as the roof opens further the lugs catch the fabric and pierce the roof. The elastic can be replaced at a cost of £50 incl fitting (approx), so do check on this otherwise you could cause some expensive unnecassary damage. Hope this helps!

Jeeze Wayne, top tip. Shame you had to find out the hard way! Thanks for passing it on.

Well, it sounds like you are all enjoying the cars.. Hopefully we will be joining you soon.

We will be having a mooch around on Saturday and Sunday looking at cars (what a way to spend a weekend)[:D]

Dave, out of the two the blue has to be the colour she would go for.

I' ll keep you posted.

Don' t rule out the Boxter S, do test drive one B4 you take the plunge, gggreat car does it all & you can get an 01 car instead of a 95/96....just a thought

Tom et al

Took the Lotus in to H.R.Owens on Saturday morning and the wife suggested that we head direct to Uxbridge to view a few 993' s. (The Lotus buzz seems to have deserted us)

They lined up a Cab, Targa and Coupe for our inspection. 2 hours later the wife decides she no longer likes the " roof up" lines of the Cab, but that the Targa and Coupe are starting to grow on her......[]

Another 30 mins later and she has come to the conclusion that she wants a " Midnight blue Coupe with sun roof, manual gearbox, C4 with a light coloured interior" not much too ask i suppose! Needless to say the trader did not have one so we left.

Saturday night saw the arrival of a friend of my wifes who we have not been in contact with for six years, she has a new boy friend. who, upon arrival, reversed his " Midnight blue Coupe with sun roof, manual gearbox, C4 with a light coloured interior" into our driveway.

So it looks like this is the direction we will go in, now if I can just talk him into selling........

Mike!!!

It' s a trap I tell you!!!

It all sounds far too coincidental. I sense a conspiracy and you are the victim.

She can' t go she hasn' t finished building the patio yet!

Then she has some finishing off to do in the garage, oh and the loft conversion....

[:)]

You think I' m joking!

I am gonna get flamed for this!!![:)]

I have been a bit quiet on here over the last couple of weeks, reason being I entered a hill climb with the Lotus and fell in love with the car again.

I was at Prescot today and ran the car on the hill all day and had a blast. The problem is, while the weather is good the car is great, and for the last two weeks it has been very good.

I had a buyer for the Lotus last week and told him I had changed my mind, jeez, I know I will regret it.

So, first let me apologise to Tom, sorry mate. I will do something by the end of the year I promise!!!!

thanks for your advice, and for treating a newbie so well.

If you see me on the hill come and say hello.

Mike (X107 EVS Titanium Elise)

I thought I had talked myself out of the Porsche thing until I saw this..

' 94 993 C4 six speed, 44,000 mile FSH dark metalic silver, light interior.

Must be the sexiest car (remember, I drive an Elise) I' ve seen.

The mileage (for resale) was the hang up with the other one, and I agree with EVERYTHING you all have said. Like Tom says though, when it comes to selling.......

Anyway, it' s through a trader and he wants £32,000.
Any comments.. Oh yes, it' s sooooo clean and just had a big service.
