I am looking at a 1990 (964) Carerra 4 Targa on Saturday, 103,000 miles. The owner seems very nice, car has FSH. Owner has stated that there is a small oil leak, states that these engines 'sweat' is this true?? are there any other things to look for? I will get inspection before buying.

Thanks in advance

Never heard the terms 'sweats' used about a 964 engine before.

Some of them apparently drop a little oil now and then but in my experience, small leaks don't get smaller. They get bigger and need to be attended to.

I've just had rocker cover gaskets replaced and that's cured the 'sweating' that I had! [:D]

Hi

The only sweating I know about with 964 is when the air con doesnt work!!!

On a serious note 964 tend to leak slightly but as previously mentioned they only get worse. Mine does not leak at all but it did slighty when i bought it although I found this to be just a faulty oil cap [:D]. I would be a bit put off by leakey engines and would want it looked at by an independant before purchase. It really depends where its comming from as eairly engines were a bit prone to leaking due to porsche not fitting seals and relying on a good finish between certain componets and the only way of repairing some of these leaks reqiures engine out and expensive repairs, I am not trying to worry you and i would buy one with slight weeping but I would get it checked out and Id use this as a bargining tool with the price.

To balance opinions, it is common for most 911's to leak some oil. Not lose alot but a few drips nonetheless. I have heard sweating used to describe very light leaks whether from engine or pipes. When the engine oil is hot it is thinner and may find its way out, but as the engine cools the leak stops.

It is a difficult one. A good pre-purchase inspection by a 911 specialist may be the way to go.

Went to see car today....most panels scratched/dented, rust around lights, rear o/s wing, and front bumper. Wheels scuffed, oil leaking, fresh oil! seats dirty, carpets dirty! service history incomplete, and the person wanted £12250!!!! Could be a long search!!

Hi Mark,
Search is worth it though. Took me a year to find the right car in the right condition and right price.

Well worth the effort though!

I've heard the term 'sweating' also- slight oil leak. Yes they can get worse, but then again, might stay like that until major work/engine out job needed in the future. Echo comments re inspection or buy from known specialist dealer.

Enjoy the search!!

Regards

Craig
