I have finally decided on the Boxster ,after eliminating the Slk, Elan and Z4. Today I was at the Porsche dealership in Glasgow I am test driving next weekend.

I do on average 600 miles a week ( Glasgow to Edinburgh daily) and thinking after today's visit I would be better buying old, I prefer the look of the 2000 - 4 models, I think they have more character ( I also own a 1984 SL )


Here is what I am thinking if I buy an older model say 70ish k after 3 years it wouldn't really owe me anything currently my everyday car is a C class sports coupe with 80k she runs like a dream with no problems.

Do you think I am asking for trouble or a money pit buying such an old Boxster? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
 
Old? That's practically new! No - Not asking for trouble - it's not like they fall apart after 40K miles [:D]
 
If you want a hi-spec one of that generation (986) look for a 550 Spyder Anniversary special edition. Tons of extra goodies and these days you should be able to find a decent one for less than £20k. If you can make it down to the [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=423103]Belvoir Castle event[/link] next weekend, there will be plenty of Boxsters from all generations to look at.
 
I just sold my 6 year old Boxster which was very high spec with 38K miles and others are around. You may well get a lower mileage one than 70K.
 
I have a year 2000 2.7. Bought for a good price with some cosmetic problems which I knew about, corroded wheels and a cracked front bumper. It had a full main dealer history and 98,000 miles on the clock in Feb 2008. Apart from a coolant bottle split and a new engine mount, both issues of wear, it has been good and has 106,000 miles on now. The coolant bottle is just one of those things that goes. look out for vibration around 3000 revs for the engine mount. All cars have bits that wear out even then they are not expensive to fix. It can cost the same as an average hatchback to run and mine manages over 30 MPG according to the fuel computer which is better than a 1.6 Focus I have.
 
Thank you for taking the time to reply. So it the general rule of advice to ignore the millage and concentrate on the history and condition of the car - I know this is a very broad statement.
 
If you where at Glasgow the chances are that it would have been a 987 which is different to a 986 in many ways ...I would be inclined to buy on condition and service over mileage.I would also look on sites like Pistonheads as there are hundreds listed on there ,out of choice I would buy private and get an inspection done by a independent there are a few in the Glasgow area which i could point you to should you wish to go down this route .If you buy from an OPC you do get a warranty and some peace off mind but you will pay thousands more for this ,you can buy warranties from the likes of Tesco. Warranty Wise. from about £500 up Hope this helps in some way
