See legendary thread below but it will take a while to get through it! There are no mechanical woes with the Spyder although, in time, front radiators will go rusty as they are exposed like any other Boxster. The engines are bulletproof, I have not heard of one failure. The big issue is the roof - it is noisy at speed when it is up. If you want the car for long distance cruising then get a normal Boxster. My personal desirable spec is manual gears, bucket seats, sports exhaust, Spyder alloys, sports-chrono, aircon and a radio. Cars with the "wrong" seats, wheels and gear box are less desirable to some - others prefer them! Pirelli tyres last half as long as Bridgestones, others came with Michelin that are somewhere in the middle. As a second car, mine is perfect for me, it is a fabulous sports car. Be prepared to attract some attention - they are rare and people stare at them, take photos and want to talk about it! Porsche warranty is transferable if it is a private sale. Other than that, there is nothing to look out for as such, they do pick up stone chips if used. Price wise there is little consistency - double check Pistonheads, Autotrader and the Porsche approved websites - there is a silver one at a main dealer with 2 year Porsche warranty for £34k that has been hanging around (wrong seats/wheels/colour?) but could offer depreciation and maintenance free motoring for 2 years. There is a lot of love for the Spyder, especially from former Lotus and Westfield owners who find the roof luxurious! Good luck.

thank you apparently its due its first service being two years old. does that sound right? i imagine this will be a fairly safe investment compared to more standard mass produced models

Yes - service due on its second birthday even at that mileage. It's not especially dear - basically an oil change.

Believe a service is £480 inc brake fluid change ,it is a minor service only at 2 years .As Rob said they are great cars and will give you so much driving pleasure .There are a lot unfortunately[:'(] out there so plenty to choose from but get the spec you desire not what people say you should have ,saying that it will impact on the desirability and value down the line . As rob says, come over here where we are all enjoying them [:)] http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=719756&mpage=256 Mine is my daily driver and whilst the roof is a single skin lightweight design with no sound deadening, the main thing is it is weatherproof and doesn't leak. As rob says, if you can get with the noise from the wind whipping around butresses on the motorway (or just take the roof off[;)]), then go buy one. The rest is proven boxster but with sharper handling, revised looks and Cayman S engine tune, so nothing to worry about mechanically. 2years/20000 miles service intervals on an engine you cant visually inspect is quite impressive[:)]. Kitchens, there are a few about but dont forget, relatively speaking, if one was lookig to buy a Boxster S, we suddenly remember how rare the Spyder is[;)].

Well you must know me from seloc, also owing Exiges and CSL's etc. Not many cars are an investment, so I would forget about that and just buy a manual one, with bucket seats, Spyder alloys, and PSE. Forget about AC it's an open car concept and the condensers will just rot away and the AC will smell like a dead cat. Like they all do after a few year then it will stop working all together. Keep to white and red and I think you will have a car which can at least hold onto a bit of money. Options like SS and sports mode can easy be added and imo are needed but cheap to add later if the main things are right. Leather dash is also a great option but rare. (Must have option for me in a 60k car though and lifts the inside over plastic) Post up the car and we can all give it a once over, but what's right for one is NOT right for every one :) I don't have the radio or the AC and want the car as light as possible as its not my main car. It's faster lighter :) and vbox proven over my cr which has more BHp. But you will not find one in that spec anyway :) . Having owned the cars you have and the Spyder and CR I see you more as a CR owner :)

£480 is price for service only. Brake fluid change is about £150. Of course all prices are subject to negotiation.
