Advise on brake pads/disks?

After my (and possibly the car's) first track day at Brands Hatch last week I'm now get a lot of squeak from my brakes and very little actual stopping. I guess it's time to change disks and pads - can you recommend anything in particular?

Find out whether they are actually worn out first. Check pads and disks for thickness.

When you have ascertained what is wrong and what (if anything) needs replacing, do a search on here for good brands to buy. Zimmerman disks are generally unpopular, pads are a matter of personal preference.

Before you go out and splash on a new set of disks and pads, it's got to be worth rubbing down the disks and the pads with P80 production paper.

The reason I say this, is that its highly proabable you've glazed either or both by subjecting them to high temperatures at Brands Hatch. Brands is a short (relatively speaking track) with only two short straights for the brakes to cool.

I had a test session in a race car once where the front pads/disks got so glazed from heat and overuse that to get the car to stop I was putting so much force through the pedal that it was locking the rear wheels..... At the time we were convinced there was a handling/ brake bias issue !

For rubbing the discs down to remove glaze- I would use Emery cloth and not Aluminium oxide based abrasive paper as this can be absorbed into the discs.

Stock, stock, stock. Will give you the best all-round performance without squealing and chucking out loads of corrosive dust. Unless you are some sort of super driver (apologies if you are) then you wont outdrive stock brakes - if you overheat stock brakes you're doing something wrong. Just make sure everything is working fine and brake fluid is good.

I agree with Scott.....except for his excessive use of the word 'stock', which is a horrible Americanism [;)]

You can't get any better than the standard Porsche brake discs, in my opinion. If you do alot of trackdays, then it is worth trying trackday orientated pads and better brake fluid.

LOL think thats what he was hinting [;)]

The Porsche ones are very good, but if you are planning more track days you could look for ones that are designed for duel use to reduce the glazing.

Also the squeaking could be coming from between the caliper and pad, a light smear of copper slip will reduce it, just make sure it gets nowhere near the pad material or disc!!!
