I started off by looking at 993 and am still looking, but recently have come across several 996 cars with full history low millage and less owners for sale for the same sort of money as a 993, it just seams good value to me, or is ? as i have also heard on the pre 2000 models that there is problems with some of these cars like engine faliure etc which would then not be such good value.

I look forward to hearing peoples comments over this.

Regards

Phil

Obviously any car can have a problem but I would not be put off from buying a pre 2000 car on the basis of what you may have heard. I have a 1998 C2 which I have owned now for about 18 months and have been absolutely delighted with it.
However, as always, you need to be careful about mileage, service history etc.

Philppe,

The engine issues are an internet favourite, get the car checked out and buy a good'un and you'll be fine.
The internet is a great source of misinformation and exaggeration

The main reason that 996's are great value against 993's (aside from the 993's "last of the aircooled cars tag"!) is the sheer numbers that have been sold. It is not without reason that the 996 series has been the best selling 911 variant of all time, but one of the downsides of this has been a degree of oversupply affecting residuals. Great news for you buying second hand, they are fabulous cars, get a good early car & you will have a bargain.

TVR is spot on. Well chuffed with mine, (although I am tempted by a GT3 if funds permit). Even if your RMS drips a bit so what, just drive and enjoy....

The 996 makes a lot of sense. As for engines - well the 993 doesn't exactly have long life in the valve guides from what I've heard. My particular one 99 model year has so far been v reliable and with a lot of miles under its belt (i just can't stopp driving it) has proven to be a good daily driver.
I think the 996 is probably a better regular vehicle to use - who cares about a little oil leek here and there or a few rattles!
