After market Ally Gear Knobs.....

Ex Skyline

New member
....Anyone know where I can get a nice one (are there 944 specific ones about)?? I'm not interested in Richbrook specials or,
anything from Halfrauds [8|]. Thanks in advance [:)].

There was one fitted on my car when I got it. The previous owner had made an adaptor for it and it was a poor fit and rattled like crazy.

Don't do it unless you get a complete shifter such as the D9 one.

ORIGINAL: simkin911

ORIGINAL: Ewan

There's no such thing as a nice after-market alloy gear knob is there?!:)

+1. But it's your car!

Agreed. I think the standard 944 gear knob is one of the nicest out there provided it is the original.

You can get new leather coverings for them which makes a big difference. They are quite a fight to fit well though.

I bought a pre covered replacement once and it wasn't anything like as nice. It had a plastic core, the shape wasn't quite the same and it didn't have the weight of the original (perhaps I should put it on ebay as a lightweight alternative )[8|].

In my humble opinion, the original is about as close to perfect as you can get. If you want to bling it up you can get an aluminium insert for the end.

+1 for the original here too.... can't say I've held a nicer knob in my hand... ooo errr sir....:)

Pete

Agreed with everyone else, The original is by far the best. Aftermarket gear knobs look wrong in our cars...

Cheers

Made the mistake of putting an aftermarket alloy example on my first 944 - cost a fair bit and was not a Halfords special. Still rattled like crazy though....

Pete,

See selection at Andy's (not me of course) pretty comprehensive selection although all are universal fit.

Found a really nice round alloy gear knob with correct shift patten on fleabay. Eliminated the rattle & vibration by using rubber 'O' Rings on the tip of selector shaft.

Hi chaps, my existing gear knob is in perfect condition, looks almost brand new, including the gaiter [8D]. Only problem is, it
makes my hand sweat quite a lot [>:]. I had a bespoke billet one (and extension) made for my T4 and, not only does it look the
Mutz Nutz [8D], it feels nice to hold too. I'm not really very clued up like you lot on Porsche etiquette, you know, what looks good,
what looks crap and, what's available out there [8|]. Hence my asking. What is a D9 shifter out of interest and, where can I get
hold of the "Balsa Wood" jobby George? I think they look fantastic [8D]!! My mate Fred Bernhard had one on his 1960, VW, Split
Screen, race taxi. If you want to see a "interesting", very quick VW bus then go to www.race-taxi.ch It'll blow your socks off [8D]!

Just replaced socks........[:D]

Corner weighted the roof before fitting....[8|]

Very interesting Pete.

Back in the 60's / 70's Balsa wood was used a bit like honeycomb was used years later to support a profile without adding weight. Some bonnet / lids of a 914/6 and 911 ST era competition cars were made this way. Very light (and flimsy)
The Gear knob of a 917 was said to be balsa wood.
Google it, some say beech, some say other woods.

The beauty for me is, form followed function.

A cheaper alternative would be to cut the top off the OE shifter and weld a piece of round bar on instead. That would open up all the aftermarket knob options and if you were feeling really trick, a laser cut alloy H gate could replace the baggy gaiter.

Dave, that looks just what I'm after mate! It mentions the shift lever being three lengths 47mm, 85mm and, 113mm. So, does
that mean if I chose a 47mm length that the Aluminium ball (knob) would just be above the tunnel and,so on for the other two
sizes [8|]?? Please excuse my ignorance [:)]. M3, what you suggest sounds cool but, is probably beyond my limited Metal work
skills and, I most defo' wouldn't be able to form the metal whatsit instead of a gaiter [8|].....[;)][:D].

The 47mm sits 18mm higher than stock. If you read the description it gives you all the exact measurements. The three sizes all give a longer lever, not a shorter one.

If you look at the picture of it fitted it sits pretty high - that may or may not be what you're looking for.
