I also spoke to an well known indie and they said to ask any warranty company if they would cover 2 main things: Intermediate shaft bearing failure Split liner failure due to leaking gasket Below is a response from Warranty Works Dear Rohit I have now spoken to claims department re these two items and their answers are:- Liner failure due to seal failure --- not covered Intermediate Shaft Failure -- due to brearing failure - They would inspect to verify the bearing has failed Hope thats helps New website text for your perusal All Mechanical & Electrical Cover Wear & Tear Causes a lot of confusion. Everything eventually wears out and one day your car will be recycled. Nothing can stop this, but what we can do is help manage the cost of running your car up to this point. Electrical parts are designed to last the life of the car, so failed electrical parts (e.g. alternators, window motors, ECU's, sensors etc.) are all covered. Mechanical parts wear out and sometimes have to be replaced, and if your garage says your brake discs are worn out their renewal is part of your normal servicing and they are not covered. Mechanical parts that break suddenly & unexpectedly are covered & are replaced under warranty. (e.g. exploding gear boxes, broken drive shafts etc.) It's simple really. Andrew Greenough (director)

Hi, just been through this process, coincidentally also got my car from Cridfords. Surprised you didn't fall for the rather nice Skoda Fabia i left with them! There doesn't seem to be any cheap way of guaranteeing a car. I'm planning a low temp thermostat at some stage with the first coolant change. I'm also wondering about spending c£1500 on the IMS upgrade; that's the first year premium spent. Could be worthwhile thinking about a maintenance fund to put your premium into, then if you don't have any problems you can spend it on yourself. Tim '03 996 Cab

This is from someone who had an IMS failure in a his meticulously maintained 996 C4 two weeks after the Porsche extended warranty ended. Hartech carried out an engine rebuild which cost me £8k. My advice is that if you can't get a third party warranty (have you tried JZM http://www.jzmporsche.com/jzm_porsche_warranty.php) then I would seriuosly consider having the IMS replaced: http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled/shaft_tech2 - it's a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild!

Hi All,

I'm a newbie and taking ownership of a 2002 996 C4S tomorrow. It has a full porsche service history with 57k miles on it.
I have a 6 month warranty with cridfords (which is where I purchased it) but that covers me for a max of £2k which from reading other posts isn't much at all.

What I'd like to know.. is there a good aftermarket warranty that I could buy that would cover me on big issues going wrong..Apologies if this has been covered before. I looked at the sticky above on warranties but none of them suit mainly because I live in west london (hounslow).

Options so far I can see:

Can't do OPC because the car is > 9 years
Warranty direct - not heard great things about them
Warranty Wise - No real knowledge on them (quoted £1k for one year)
Autoprotect - Recommended by Cridfords
Hartech - Like the sound of but in Bolton and hence too far
RSJ - But don't really want a service plan or labour free warranty
Also what do you guys think is a reasonable amount to spend on a warranty for a year?

Finally, any good independents in hounslow/west london region apart from Jaz in wembley who I know and have heard only good things about?

Hi Rohit, Good luck with the car! I am new to Porsche ownership having just picked up my car from a private sale a week ago. I had the car inspected independantly first and then was looking at the various options in terms of warranty. I was surprised to read you comments about warranty direct which was a company i was looking at as well as Hartech. A couple of my friends have had warranties with Warranty Direct in the past and have had really good experiences with them. Anyway they quoted me £895 for their top package, but as been mentioned before not worth anything if they wont even cover IMS failure under wear and tear. I decided to hold of on the warranty as the car needed a service before they would consider anyway, so I got the boys at Jaz to service it as I live in Wembley its round the corner. Good guys, but have come back with a shopping list of things including the infamous coilpacks. I will be very interested to find out who you do go with. Please update us.

Hi Guys, Thanks for your comments! Was also looking at Hartech but as it's in Bolton that's just too far given I'm in London. Like most, I'm happy to pay the money provided they cover items and not wangle themselves using the "wear and tear" card. Will continue to look and will update on my progress (if I make any) [:)] Roy

Hi All, does anyone know of a warranty company other than a Porsche warranty that has paid out on IMS failure? Luckily not in that position (touching lots of wood as I type) yet :) Thx Rohit

Hi All, I've still been in the pursuit of a genuine after market warranty that will pay out incase of failure/wear and tear. I spoke to Warranty Direct as I got a random call from one of their sales guys. I asked him about specific big issues that are considered common on a 996 (list given to me by Steve Winters of Jaz in Wembley). This is the response I got from the sales chap after he had spoken with their Claims dept. Have a look and tell me if you think it's worth taking....Cost of £875 per year to take to a franchised dealer with no excess and claim limit of £24,000 subject to a 120 point pre check which takes 1 hr. From: Chris Fajer <xxxxxx@warrantydirect.co.uk> To: Kumar, Rohit X Sent: Tue May 24 17:49:27 2011 Subject: Porsche Extra Care cover Mr Kumar Further to our conversation I can confirm that the following is covered – subject to inspection as discussed. · Intermediate shaft bearing · Timing chain · Crank shaft bearing · Cylinder · Cylinder bores. I can also confirm that as an act of good will we will complete the inspection free of charge. The warranty cost of our Extra Care policy would be £875 inclusive of insurance premium tax. This would also include the 6 month late start option. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me otherwise I will look forward to speaking tomorrow. Grateful for some advice...Cridfords offered me a Gold Warranty with Autoprotect for 24 months for £800 but trying to get any useful info from Autoprotect has been rather difficult which doesn't bode well. Thanks Rohit

Proof of the pudding comes at claims time, but on the face of it, it looks like a good deal to me. (I edited your post to blank his email address. He wouldn't thank us if he got blitzed by spam).

Thanks for editing the gents email address. Totally forgot to do that, you can tell I'm new to this. Rgds Rohit [:)]

Hi Chris, looking at the ExtraCare warranty book right now and under Engine it specifically states "Rear Main Seal"

Ok, from what ive read about costs to replace the seal, it seams like the warrenty would pay for itself if you had to claim for just that 1 thing.

Woah woah woah... hold your horses... from bitter past (non porsche) experience, all these 3rd party warranties ONLY pay out for a "Breakdown", which in their definition is a sudden or unexpected failure of a part, which can't be attributed to wear and tear. So, be careful about what you asked them and have everything in writing. They may well say that x, y, and z are covered, but they won't be covered for what they consider to be wear and tear - which can be very subjective. They will also refuse payout unless the thing that happened caused you to breakdown and not be able to continue your journey. They also have cop-out for design faults, so it wouldn't surpise me if they would throw that one at you in case of some of the 'known' 911 faults.
